- Cache stocked: 1GB and 2GB P-series flash backed write cache on a 72-bit DDR3-1333 bus, the upgrades HPE documents for the P420i, plus the 12in Super Capacity option
- RAID levels: 0, 1, 1+0, 5, 50, 6 and 60, with a minimum of 512MB of cache required for parity RAID
- Add-in cards stocked: Smart Array P421 with 1GB or 2GB FBWC and two external 6Gb SAS ports, and the H221 host bus adapter, each taking the low profile slot
Parity RAID on this platform is a cache purchase, not a controller purchase. The P420i in the I/O module needs a minimum of 512MB before RAID 5, 50, 6 and 60 are available at all — below that it does RAID 0, 1 and 1+0. And the 12in Super Capacity option is not optional: HPE makes it a required part of implementing any Smart Array controller with flash here.

The card that runs the drives in this chassis is not on this page, and that is the platform rather than the listing: the P420i is part of the I/O module and the B110i part of the node board. What is buyable is the cache path and the slot — and below 512MB the P420i does RAID 0, 1 and 1+0.
Choosing the Right SL4545 G7 Storage Controller Part
- The super capacitor is not optional. HPE makes the 12in Super Cap a required option for a Smart Array controller with flash, so a cache module alone is an incomplete order.
- Parity RAID is a cache feature. RAID 5, 50, 6 and 60 need at least 512MB on the controller; below that the array is limited to RAID 0, 1 and 1+0.
- RAID 6 needs firmware rather than the Advanced Pack. HPE notes SAAP 2.0 is no longer required for RAID 6 and 60 given firmware 4.68 or later.
- One slot, one card, one node. The low profile PCIe slot takes one expansion option, and the P421, the H221, network adapters and I/O accelerators compete for it.
- A second P420i costs you that slot. HPE supports up to two P420i controllers per node, but a node with two cannot take the Storage Mezzanine to PCIe kit.

Two of them. The Smart Array P420i sits in the rear I/O module and runs the large form factor bays; the Dynamic Smart Array B110i on each node controls only that node's two small form factor drives.
Does the SL4545 G7 support RAID 6?
Yes, on the P420i with at least 512MB of cache fitted. HPE notes Smart Array Advanced Pack 2.0 is no longer required for RAID 6 and 60, provided the controller runs firmware 4.68 or later.
Do I need the super capacitor with a flash backed cache module?
