Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant SL390s G7, new and refurbished. Each tray takes up to two Intel Xeon processors on the Intel 5520 chipset, mixing different processor models in one tray is not supported, and on a GPU tray the second socket is not optional: HPE does not support GPUs in a single-processor configuration.

On a GPU tray the second processor is a prerequisite, not an upgrade. HPE does not support GPUs in a single-processor configuration, so a 2U or 4U tray needs both sockets filled with matching parts before a GPU goes in. The second CPU also opens the rest of the memory: HPE documents a maximum of six Registered DIMMs per processor.

The wattage letter carries more weight on a scalable system than it does on a standalone server, because up to eight trays draw on the same four chassis supplies. Sixteen 130W processors in one s6500 is a very different power budget from sixteen 60W parts, and it is the chassis, not the tray, that absorbs the difference. Where a tray is being upgraded rather than rebuilt, the class already fitted is a good guide to what the chassis was provisioned for.

Choosing the Right SL390s G7 Processor

  • A second processor must match the first. Mixing different processor models in one tray is not supported, so going to two CPUs means two of the same kit unless the first is being replaced.
  • A GPU tray needs two processors. HPE does not support GPUs in a single-processor configuration, which makes the second CPU a prerequisite rather than an upgrade on 2U and 4U trays.
  • The second processor opens the rest of the memory. HPE documents a maximum of six Registered DIMMs per processor, so the 192GB registered ceiling assumes both sockets are filled.
  • 130W parts are not restricted to one tray. HPE lists them for all three form factors, and they can be used with the redundant fan kit.
  • Low-voltage memory constrains the processor choice. If the tray runs PC3L modules, the CPU has to come from the Xeon 5600 series.
