A ProLiant SL is a server tray rather than a server in its own chassis. It carries the processors, memory, drives and management of a complete machine, and slides into a shared chassis that supplies power and cooling for several trays at once. The family was built for scale-out and high-performance computing, where the goal is the most compute per rack and per watt rather than the most expansion inside one box. What Defines an SL Server Tray

• No power supplies or fans on the tray: both live in the chassis and are shared. A tray listing therefore has no power supply part numbers, and a power or cooling fault is a chassis-level part.
• The chassis holds the rails, not the tray: the chassis mounts in the rack and the trays slide into it, so rail kits belong to the chassis.
• Half-width and double-node trays: the density comes from putting more than one server in the space a single rack server would use. The SL2x170z G6 names it directly — two independent server nodes in one tray, each with its own processors and memory, so parts are ordered per node.
• A tray is specific to its chassis: connector position, depth and power delivery change between chassis generations, so identify the chassis as well as the tray before ordering anything structural.
• Compute trays and storage trays: most of the family is compute-oriented, with the SL4540 Gen8 and SL4545 G7 as the storage-dense members. The difference shows up in the drive count and in what the listing carries.
• Expansion is deliberately thin: a tray gives you onboard networking and a small number of slots rather than the riser cages of a rack server, because the design spends its volume on nodes.

An SL is a tray, so the chassis owns the parts you would expect to find on a server. Power supplies, fans and rails are all chassis hardware, shared between trays, which is why an SL model listing carries no power supply part numbers. Identify the chassis as well as the tray before ordering anything structural.

What is the difference between an SL and a DL?
An SL is a tray, not a standalone server. It has no power supply and no fans of its own and slides into a chassis that provides both for several trays at once. A DL is a complete server in its own chassis.

Does an SL tray come with rails?

What does the 2x in SL2x170z G6 mean?

Can I move a tray between chassis generations?
