Count the slots the server actually has before choosing a card. Nine expansion slots sounds generous, but slots 5 to 9 belong to the second processor, so a single-processor tower has four. Four of the nine run at x4 speed and one is PCIe 2.0, which is why a 25 Gigabit adapter belongs in an x16 slot rather than whichever slot happens to be free.

Plenty of ML350 Gen9 upgrades turn out not to need a card at all. Four embedded Gigabit ports cover most towers, and the fifth jack is iLO, which does not consume one of them. Buy a card when the need is bandwidth above 1 Gigabit, optical media, or more than four data ports — and check the slot budget first, because a storage controller and an express bay bridge card want the same nine slots.
Choosing the Right ML350 Gen9 Network Adapter
- Count the slots the server actually has. Slots 5 to 9 need the second processor, so a single-processor tower has four, not nine.
- Budget the memory for 10 Gigabit. HPE calls for a minimum of 2GB of server memory per 10Gb adapter installed.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. HPE states that direct attach copper cables for copper environments, and fibre transceivers and cables for optical, must be purchased separately from the adapter.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics in between, which is why the 530T and 561T exist alongside the SFP+ cards.
- Mind the link width. Four of the nine slots run at x4 speed and one is PCIe 2.0, so a 25 Gigabit card belongs in one of the x16 slots rather than whichever slot is free.
