Read the input line before the wattage line. HPE rates the 1400W Platinum Plus supply at 200 to 240 VAC only, so it is not a drop-in on the 120V circuit a tower is often plugged into, however much headroom the number suggests. Oversizing costs efficiency too: a supply running far below its rating sits away from its best efficiency point.
Choosing the Right ML350 Gen9 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed unit first. Input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating all have to match, so the existing supply is the specification.
- Four different 800W units are listed, and they do not mix. Platinum, Titanium, Universal and −48VDC are the same wattage and still a mismatch for one another.
- Redundancy means a matched pair. One supply in a four-bay chassis is not redundant whatever its rating, and hot-plug replacement only helps when a second unit carries the load.
- −48VDC is a different world. That unit belongs on DC rectifier feeds, not on a standard wall or rack circuit.
- If the noise is the problem, look at the fans. Fan redundancy doubles the count: three to six on a single-processor machine, four to eight on a two-processor one.
