Two mixing rules, and the second one catches people who got the first one right. Registered and Load Reduced DIMMs cannot run together — and DDR4-2933 kits are supported only with Second Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, where DDR4-2666 kits belong to the first generation. Check which processor is fitted before ordering, because the CPU also caps the memory per socket at 1TB, 2TB or 4.5TB by suffix.

The module is rarely what sets the speed here. A Silver 4210R holds DDR4 to 2400 MT/s and a Bronze 3204 to 2133 MT/s whatever is fitted, so a DDR4-2933 kit bought for a Silver or Bronze machine is paying for headroom the processor will not use. On Platinum and Gold 6200 parts the second DIMM in a channel is what costs the clock, which is why filling 24 slots with smaller modules runs slower than reaching the same capacity with twelve larger ones.

Choosing the Right ML350 Gen10 Memory

  • Match the DDR4 grade to the processor generation. HPE states that DDR4-2933 kits are supported only with Second Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and DDR4-2666 kits only with the first generation.
  • Never mix Registered and Load Reduced. The two are not supported together, so converting a machine from one to the other means replacing every module in it.
  • Count processors before counting slots. One processor exposes 12 slots; the other 12 arrive only with the second CPU, whatever memory you buy.
  • Check the suffix if you are chasing capacity. Reaching 3TB needs processors rated above the 1TB-per-socket baseline, because the CPU caps the socket before the DIMM count does.
  • Every HPE DDR4 option kit here is a single DIMM. Filling all 24 slots means 24 kits, not one boxed set.
