HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 Memory

HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR5 memory for the HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11, new and refurbished. This server takes ECC Unbuffered DIMMs and nothing else — the Registered and Load Reduced modules that fill the rest of the Gen11 range will not run in it, and neither will plain non-ECC UDIMMs.

ML30 Gen11 Memory Specifications

  • Type: HPE DDR5 Standard Memory, ECC Unbuffered (UDIMM) only; HPE states the server does not support non-ECC UDIMMs, RDIMMs or LRDIMMs
  • Slots: four, arranged as two channels per processor with two DIMM slots per channel; all four are usable with the single processor installed
  • Kits: 16GB single-rank x8 and 32GB dual-rank x8, both DDR5-4800 with CAS-40-39-39 timings, and each option kit is one DIMM
  • Maximum capacity: 128GB, on four 32GB UDIMMs
  • Operating speed: HPE documents the memory subsystem as supporting single-rank and dual-rank DDR5 UDIMMs at up to 4400 MT/s, and lists 4400 MT/s against every processor offered for this server
  • Population: fill in the order 2A, 4B, 1C, 3D; channel 1 is the pair of slots nearest the processor and channel 2 the pair farthest from it, with a white slot marking the first slot of each channel

ECC Unbuffered DDR5 is the only memory this board takes. HPE states the ML30 Gen11 does not support non-ECC UDIMMs, RDIMMs or LRDIMMs, so a Registered kit from a DL360 Gen11 or ML350 Gen11 will not run in it. Four slots, two kit sizes, and a 128GB ceiling on four 32GB modules — check what is fitted before ordering, because HPE asks for the same capacity within a channel.

Should you fit 16GB or 32GB modules?

DIMMs fittedPopulationWith 16GB kitsWith 32GB kits
Oneslot 2A only16GB32GB
Two2A and 4B, one per channel32GB64GB
Fourall slots, two per channel64GB128GB

With only two kit sizes and four slots, the decision is capacity per slot rather than capacity overall. Two 32GB dual-rank modules in different channels is the configuration HPE cites for running at up to 4400 MT/s, and it leaves two slots open for a later doubling; four 16GB modules reach the same 64GB but fill the board, so the next upgrade means replacing memory rather than adding it.

Choosing the Right ML30 Gen11 Memory

  • ECC Unbuffered is the only type that will post. RDIMMs pulled from a DL360 Gen11 or an ML350 Gen11 are the wrong register type for this board, and desktop non-ECC DDR5 is excluded outright.
  • Keep each channel symmetric. HPE requires the same DIMM capacity within a channel and does not recommend mixing capacities anywhere in the server, so a 16GB module and a 32GB module are not a pair.
  • Buy in ones, twos or fours. HPE recommends a DIMM count of 1, 2 or 4 for balanced performance across the two channels.
  • The rating on the module is not the speed you get. Both kits are DDR5-4800 parts, and HPE documents this server as running UDIMMs at up to 4400 MT/s; mixing in a slower DIMM brings every module down to the slower speed.
  • DDR4 does not carry over. HPE states that memory from previous-generation servers is not qualified or warranted here, so an ML30 Gen10 upgrade cannot be reused in a Gen11.

ML30 Gen11 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in an ML30 Gen11?
128GB, using four 32GB dual-rank ECC UDIMMs. There is no larger UDIMM qualified for this platform and no second processor to add slots, so 128GB is the ceiling.

Can I use RDIMMs in an ML30 Gen11?
No. HPE states the server does not support RDIMMs, LRDIMMs or non-ECC UDIMMs. Only ECC Unbuffered DDR5 modules are supported, which is what separates this tower from the rest of the Gen11 range.

How many memory slots does the ML30 Gen11 have?
Four, arranged as two channels with two DIMM slots per channel. All four are usable with the single processor installed, since there is no second socket holding half the board in reserve.

Why does my DDR5-4800 memory run at 4400 MT/s?
That is the platform, not a fault. HPE documents this server as supporting single-rank and dual-rank DDR5 UDIMMs at up to 4400 MT/s, and lists 4400 MT/s against every processor offered for it, so 4800-rated modules run below their rating here.

Can I mix 16GB and 32GB modules?
Not within a channel - HPE requires the same capacity when populating a channel. Mixing different capacities anywhere in the server is not recommended, so a matched set is the safer buy.

Does an HPE memory kit for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Each option kit is a single DIMM, so a 128GB configuration is four 32GB kits rather than one boxed set.
