- Memory clock: set by the processor — 1600MT/s on the E5-2603v3 and E5-2609v3, 1866 on the E5-2620v3 through E5-2640v3, 2133 on the E5-2650v3 and above, and 2400 on the higher v4 parts

A second processor does far more than add cores here. It makes the other eight of the sixteen DIMM slots usable and brings two more PCIe slots online, one of them x16. It must be the same model as the first, it carries the third system fan the chassis needs, and HPE recommends the 900W power option for any two-processor build.

On a rack server the second processor is a compute decision. On this tower it is also the expansion decision: half the memory capacity and two of the six slots only exist once the second socket is filled, so a machine that has run out of DIMM slots or run out of room for a controller may be a processor purchase rather than the part the search started with. The kit brings its own fan, and the power budget moves with it.
Choosing the Right ML150 Gen9 Processor
- A second processor must match the first. HPE does not support mixing processor models, so a two-socket upgrade means two of the same part unless the fitted one is being replaced.
- The processor sets the memory clock. An E5-2603v3 or E5-2609v3 holds DDR4 at 1600MT/s however fast the modules are rated, where the higher v4 parts reach 2400MT/s.
- Changing family is also a memory decision. DDR4-2133 CAS-15 kits are documented for v3 processors and DDR4-2400 CAS-17 kits for v4, so the DIMMs and the CPU move together.
- Watch the cooling as well as the wattage. This tower runs two non-hot-plug fans on one processor and three on two, with no fan redundancy, and HPE notes performance can be reduced above 30°C or with a fan fault.
- Check the supply against the second socket. HPE recommends the 900W power option for two-processor configurations rather than the entry supply.
