On a 100–127V circuit this server is capped at 550W whichever supply is fitted. The 900W AC 240VDC module only delivers its rating on a 200–240V feed, and a redundant pair is rated to 800W rather than 900W because the modules run as primary and backup instead of sharing the load.

The middle column is where towers get caught. A 900W module on a 208–240V feed delivers its rating, but the same module on a 100–127V office circuit is capped at 550W — the same figure as the entry supply, for a good deal more money. Adding the second module for redundancy also costs 100W off the top at high line, because the pair is rated to 800W rather than 900W. Choosing the Right ML150 Gen9 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed unit first. Input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating all have to match, so the supply already fitted is the specification — two supplies of the same wattage are still a mismatch if their efficiency grades differ.
- Redundancy is a backplane, not a spare supply. A second input module only works on the redundant power supply backplane; a server built around the single entry supply has nowhere to put one.
- Check the wall before the wattage. On a 100–127V circuit this server cannot draw more than 550W whichever supply is fitted, so the high-output option only pays back on a 200–240V feed.
- Size to the processor count. HPE recommends the 900W option for any two-processor configuration and the entry supply for lighter single-processor builds.
- The third fan is not a power part. A two-processor tower runs three system fans, and the third ships with the processor kit rather than with the supply.
