HPE ProLiant ML150 Gen9 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant ML150 Gen9, new and refurbished. This tower ships with two embedded Gigabit ports, not four, on a Broadcom 5717 dual-port controller — so the port count runs out sooner here than on the rack ProLiants of the same generation, and an add-in card is the usual answer.

ML150 Gen9 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: a Broadcom 5717 dual-port 1Gb controller giving two RJ-45 ports at the rear
  • Management port: HPE iLO 4 with 2GB NAND is standard, and a dedicated iLO port kit is available that fits an x1 slot reserved for it rather than one of the six PCIe slots
  • Expansion: six PCI Express 3.0 slots — two x16 and four x8 — all full height, with three of the six accepting a full-length card
  • Slot availability: two of the six slots, including one of the two x16 slots, are wired to the second processor and are unavailable on a single-processor server
  • Gigabit cards stocked: the 331T four-port, and the 361T and 332T dual-port RJ-45 adapters
  • 10 Gigabit cards stocked: the 560SFP+ dual-port over SFP+, and the 561T dual-port over 10GBASE-T copper
  • 10GbE requirement: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed

Count the slots you can actually use before buying a card. The tower has six full-height PCIe 3.0 slots, but two of them are wired to the second processor, so a single-processor ML150 Gen9 has four. Only three of the six take a full-length card, and HPE requires the PCI baffle kit whenever a card goes in.

Which Adapter Does This Tower Need?

What you needAnswer
Two more Gigabit copper ports361T or 332T dual-port
Four Gigabit ports on one card331T four-port
10 Gigabit over fibre or direct attach560SFP+ dual-port
10 Gigabit over existing RJ-45 cabling561T dual-port 10GBASE-T
Management on a port of its ownThe dedicated iLO port kit, which is not a network adapter

The media question matters more than the speed question on the two 10 Gigabit rows: an SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without optics in between, and in a tower that is often already cabled with copper, the 561T is the card that reuses what is on the floor. Whichever goes in, HPE asks for 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in the DIMM slots.

Choosing the Right ML150 Gen9 Network Adapter

  • Count the slots you can actually use. Six sounds generous, but two of them need the second processor, so a single-processor tower has four.
  • Check the card length, not just the height. Every slot is full height, but only three of the six take a full-length card.
  • Budget the memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter fitted.
  • Order the PCI baffle kit with the card. HPE requires it whenever a networking, storage or graphics card is installed in this chassis.

Complete Your ML150 Gen9 Build

Ten Gigabit adapters call for memory headroom, and half the slots call for a second processor — see ML150 Gen9 memory and processors alongside this page. ML150 Gen9 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does an ML150 Gen9 have as standard?
Two. A Broadcom 5717 dual-port 1Gb controller provides two embedded RJ-45 ports at the rear of the tower.

Does the ML150 Gen9 have a dedicated iLO management port?
Not as standard. iLO 4 with 2GB NAND is built in, but the dedicated management port is an option kit that fits an x1 slot set aside for it, so it costs nothing in PCIe expansion.

Does the ML150 Gen9 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The 560SFP+ dual-port adapter covers SFP+ fibre or direct attach, and the 561T dual-port adapter covers 10GBASE-T over RJ-45 copper.

Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE documents a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in the memory configuration.

How many PCIe slots can I use with one processor?
Four of the six. Two slots, including one of the two x16 slots, are wired to the second processor and only come online once it is fitted.

Will a full-length card fit an ML150 Gen9?
In three of the six slots. All six are full height, but the other three are specified for half-length cards only.
