This chassis is small form factor only — up to 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch bays in three boxes of eight — so no 3.5-inch drive will seat in it, whatever adapter you are offered.

- Interface: 12G SAS and 6G SATA hot-plug drives in Smart Carrier (SC) carriers, plus M.2 2280 SATA solid state drives on a carrier
- Shipped drives: none — no hard drives ship standard, and factory builds fill unused bays with blanks
Small form factor only, in three boxes of eight. The DL560 Gen10 has no large form factor front end at all, so no 3.5-inch drive will seat in it. Eight bays ship as standard in Box 3; reaching 16 and then 24 means adding the Box 2 and Box 1 cage kits, which are separate part numbers from the drives themselves.

Count the bays on the front of the machine before ordering, because a drive is useless without a backplane behind it and the cage kits are separate part numbers. The Universal Media Bay occupies Box 1, so a server with an optical drive or a front display port cannot also run 24 bays.
Choosing the Right DL560 Gen10 Drive
- Check the carrier, not just the capacity. SAS and SATA hot-plug drives use the Smart Carrier, NVMe drives use the SCN carrier, and the two are not interchangeable in a bay wired for the other.
- NVMe needs the right box and the right plumbing. Eight NVMe drives only go in Box 2, and NVMe capacity comes off the risers or the NVMe mezzanine card rather than a SAS controller.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the backplane should all run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest.
- Write endurance is a real choice here. Write Intensive, Mixed Use and Read Intensive solid state drives differ in endurance rather than interface, and a read-heavy database does not need the write intensive part.
- M.2 is for boot, not bulk. The M.2 2280 modules ride on a carrier rather than a hot-plug bay, which makes them a boot device rather than array storage.

Can I put 3.5-inch drives in a DL560 Gen10?
No. The chassis is small form factor only, so a 3.5-inch drive has nowhere to seat. There is no large form factor drive cage for this server.
How many NVMe drives can a DL560 Gen10 take?
A maximum of 12: two in Box 1, eight in Box 2 and two in Box 3. The eight-drive NVMe option only fits Box 2, and NVMe bays need the Express Bay or Premium cage kits.
What is the maximum storage capacity of a DL560 Gen10?
58TB on 24 2.4TB SAS hard drives, or 367TB on 24 15.3TB SAS solid state drives. SATA hard drives reach 48TB and NVMe reaches 184TB across 12 drives.
Do drives ship with the server?
No. HPE ships no hard drives as standard with this model, and factory-integrated servers arrive with blanks in the empty bays.
Which order should I fill the drive boxes in?
Box 3 first, then Box 2, then Box 1. HPE gives that as the population order for a field upgrade, and Box 1 is also where the Universal Media Bay goes if the server has one.
