HPE's own answer to sizing is the Power Advisor, and for a server of this age the honest shortcut is to read the label on the unit already fitted and match it, unless the machine has gained processors or drives since. Oversizing is not free: a supply running far below its rated load sits away from its best efficiency point, which is the point of the 460W option.
Choosing the Right DL385 G7 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed supply first. It gives you the output and the efficiency grade in one look, and on a redundant pair it specifies the second unit.
- Redundancy means a second supply, not a bigger one. A 1+1 configuration is two units in the two bays; a single supply is not redundant whatever its rating.
- Platinum and Gold are not stocked at every output. Both grades exist at 460W and 750W, while 1200W is a Platinum part.
- −48VDC is a different rack feed entirely. That unit belongs in racks fed by DC rectifiers and ships with a DC cord; it is not an alternative to an AC supply on a standard feed.
- Size against the processors, not the chassis. Two 140W TDP twelve-core parts and a full drive cage is a different power budget from a pair of 85W TDP HE parts.
