HPE ProLiant DL165 G7 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL165 G7, new and refurbished. The server already carries four Gigabit ports on board from two embedded NC362i dual-port adapters, and it has only two PCI Express Gen2 slots to add to them — so a card here has to earn its slot against the storage controller.

DL165 G7 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: two HPE NC362i Integrated Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapters, four 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports in total
  • Management port: the dedicated Lights-Out 100i port is an option on this server, supplied by the Dedicated Management Port Kit rather than fitted as standard
  • Expansion: two PCI Express Gen2 slots — a full-height x16 slot and a low-profile internal-only slot on an x4 bus; reaching the second one means the first takes a half-length card
  • Gigabit copper cards stocked: NC112T single port, NC360T dual port, NC373T and NC382T Multifunction adapters, and the NC364T, NC365T and NC375T quad-port adapters
  • Gigabit fibre: the NC373F PCI Express Multifunction 1000SX adapter, for optical runs
  • 10 Gigabit rules: the NC522SFP and NC550SFP dual-port SFP+ adapters are stocked; HPE supports no more than two 10GbE devices in one ProLiant server, calls for at least 2GB of server memory per adapter, and sells direct attach copper cables and fibre transceivers separately

Check what you already have before buying a card. The DL165 G7 ships with four Gigabit ports from two embedded NC362i dual-port adapters, and it has just two PCI Express Gen2 slots — one of which is low profile and internal only. A network card belongs in the full-height x16 slot, which is the same slot a storage controller often wants.

How many ports can a DL165 G7 carry?

What you needWhere it comes from
Four Gigabit copper portsAlready fitted — the two embedded NC362i dual-port adapters
More Gigabit copper portsNC364T, NC365T or NC375T quad-port; NC360T for two more
Gigabit over fibreNC373F Multifunction 1000SX
10 Gigabit over SFP+NC522SFP or NC550SFP, and no more than two per server
A dedicated management portThe Dedicated Management Port Kit, which is an option here

The four embedded ports cover more DL165 G7 builds than the parts list suggests, and in a two-slot chassis the cost of a card is rarely just the card. A quad-port adapter in the full-height slot takes the server to eight Gigabit ports, and a 10GbE card does the same job for bandwidth instead of port count. Either way the slot arithmetic comes first, because the storage controller is usually competing for the same space.

Choosing the Right DL165 G7 Network Adapter

  • Count the slots, not the ports. Two PCI Express Gen2 slots is the entire expansion budget, and a full-length card in the first one blocks the second.
  • The second slot is internal only. It cannot present a port at the back of the server, so a network card belongs in the full-height x16 slot.
  • Budget the memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for a minimum of 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter, and supports no more than two 10GbE devices in one server.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
  • A management port is an add-on here. Unlike ProLiant servers with an integrated management NIC, the DL165 G7 takes its dedicated Lights-Out 100i port as an option kit.

Ten Gigabit adapters call for memory headroom — see DL165 G7 memory, and check DL165 G7 storage controllers before assuming a slot is free. DL165 G7 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does a DL165 G7 have as standard?
Four. Two embedded HPE NC362i Integrated Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapters provide four 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports.

Does the DL165 G7 have a dedicated management port?
Only as an option. The Lights-Out 100i remote management port comes from a Dedicated Management Port Kit rather than being fitted as standard, which is a real difference from ProLiant servers with an integrated iLO NIC.

Does the DL165 G7 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The NC522SFP and NC550SFP dual-port SFP+ adapters are listed for this server, and HPE supports no more than two 10GbE devices in one ProLiant server.

Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE calls for a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, so a second card assumes headroom in the memory configuration.

How many slots does the DL165 G7 have for a network card?
Two PCI Express Gen2 slots in total, but only the full-height x16 slot is usable for a card that needs ports at the back of the server. The second slot is low profile and internal only.

Are cables included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are bought separately from the adapter.
