HPE ProLiant DL120 G7 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant DL120 G7, new and refurbished. This server takes Unbuffered ECC DDR3 across four slots, to a documented ceiling of 32GB — and the rule that catches people out is that HPE records no support for Registered DIMMs here at all, so an RDIMM pulled from a DL380 G7 is not a slower option, it is a non-starter.
DL120 G7 Memory Specifications
- Type: DDR3-1333 Unbuffered ECC (UDIMM), PC3-10600 and PC3L-10600E, single-rank or dual-rank at 1066 or 1333 MT/s; HPE documents no support for Registered DIMMs and none for non-ECC unbuffered modules
- Slots: four in total, as two channels of two — channel A is the pair of DIMMs closest to the processor, channel B the pair furthest from it
- Maximum: 32GB, using four 8GB Unbuffered ECC kits at two DIMMs per channel, which HPE documents as operating at 1333MHz when all four slots are filled
- Kits listed: 2GB and 4GB dual-rank x8 PC3-10600 CAS-9 kits, and an 8GB dual-rank x8 PC3L-10600E CAS-9 low-voltage kit
- Kit contents: every DDR3 option kit for this server is a single DIMM, so a four-slot fill is four kits
- Low voltage: 1.35V LV-DIMMs are supported, but HPE notes they will be performed at 1.5V in this server
Registered memory is not a slower option here, it is a non-starter. HPE documents no RDIMM support on the DL120 G7, and no non-ECC unbuffered support either — the module has to be Unbuffered and ECC. Four slots, 32GB maximum, and every option kit is a single DIMM, so the ceiling is four 8GB kits.
Which slot does the next DIMM go in?
| DIMMs fitted | DIMM1C | DIMM2A | DIMM3D | DIMM4B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One | Empty | DIMM | Empty | Empty |
| Two | Empty | DIMM | Empty | DIMM |
| Three | DIMM | DIMM | Empty | DIMM |
| Four | DIMM | DIMM | DIMM | DIMM |
HPE's documented order puts the second module in the other channel rather than beside the first, which is why two kits is the sensible smallest upgrade on this server: slots 2 and 4 are an interleaving pair, as are slots 1 and 3, and HPE recommends installing memory in identical pairs. Three DIMMs is a documented configuration, not a balanced one. Where module ranks differ, populate from the heaviest load to the lightest — dual-rank before single-rank.
Choosing the Right DL120 G7 Memory
- Registered memory will not work here. HPE documents no RDIMM support on this platform, and no non-ECC unbuffered support either, so the module has to be Unbuffered and ECC.
- 32GB is the ceiling and it takes every slot. Reaching it means four 8GB kits; HPE lists no larger UDIMM for this server, so there is no way to leave a slot free and still hit the maximum.
- Every kit is one DIMM. A 16GB upgrade is two 8GB kits, not one boxed pair, and the same holds for the 2GB and 4GB parts.
- Buy in identical pairs. HPE's recommendation for best performance is identical pairs across the two interleaving pairs of slots, rather than mixing sizes slot by slot.
- Low voltage does not save power on this server. The 8GB kit is a PC3L low-voltage part, but HPE notes 1.35V modules will be run at 1.5V here, so buy it for the capacity rather than the voltage.

Memory speed on this platform follows the processor that is already fitted, since HPE quotes the DDR3 rating as the maximum speed of the processor and notes that actual speed depends on the DIMMs installed. DL120 G7 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a DL120 G7?
32GB, reached with four 8GB Unbuffered ECC DDR3-1333 modules at two DIMMs per channel. HPE documents that configuration as operating at 1333MHz with all four slots filled.
Can I use Registered (RDIMM) memory in a DL120 G7?
No. HPE documents no support for RDIMMs in this server, and no support for non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs either. The memory has to be Unbuffered ECC DDR3.
How many memory slots does a DL120 G7 have?
Four, arranged as two channels with two slots each. Channel A is the pair closest to the processor and channel B the pair furthest from it.
Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. HPE states that all DDR3 memory option kits for this server consist of one DIMM per kit, so filling all four slots means buying four kits.
Can I use low-voltage PC3L memory in a DL120 G7?
Yes. The 8GB kit listed for this server is a PC3L-10600E low-voltage part. HPE notes that 1.35V LV-DIMMs are supported but will be performed at 1.5V in this machine.
Why does my DL120 G7 memory run at 1066MHz rather than 1333MHz?
The quoted DDR3 speed is the maximum speed of the processor fitted, and HPE notes that actual memory speed depends on the quantity and type of DIMMs installed. The server supports both 1066 and 1333 MT/s unbuffered ECC modules.
