HPE ProLiant BL490c G7 Hard Drives
Genuine HPE solid state drives for the HPE ProLiant BL490c G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. Storage on this blade is deliberately small — HPE traded drive bays for DIMM slots — and what is left is two non-hot-plug 2.5-inch SATA bays mounted on a baffle above the processors, with 800GB as the documented ceiling.
BL490c G7 Drive Specifications
- Bays: two, numbered 1 and 2, sitting on a baffle above the processors rather than behind a front bezel
- Type: non-hot-plug 2.5-inch SATA MLC solid state drives — no internal SAS, and no hot-plug carrier
- Capacities documented: 100GB, 200GB and 400GB 3G SATA enterprise mainstream SSDs, supported in either bay
- Maximum internal storage: 800GB, from two 400GB drives
- Controller: the embedded chipset SATA RAID controller, or a Smart Array P712m mezzanine card where hardware RAID is wanted
- Beyond the two bays: an attached D2200sb Storage Blade carries hot-plug SFF SAS or SATA hard drives, and a Smart Array P700m mezzanine reaches SAS storage outside the blade
Both bays are non-hot-plug, and there are only two of them. The drives sit on a baffle above the processors, so changing one means pulling the blade from the enclosure and taking the access panel off. Plan the outage, not the swap — and note that neither bay takes a SAS drive.
What actually fits the two internal bays?
| What you need | On the BL490c G7 |
|---|---|
| Hot-plug replacement | Not internally — both bays are non-hot-plug, so the blade leaves the enclosure to change a drive |
| SAS drives | Not internally — the two bays are 3G SATA |
| More than two drives | An attached storage blade, or external SAS on a Smart Array P700m mezzanine |
| Hardware RAID on the pair | A Smart Array P712m mezzanine; the embedded chipset controller does RAID 0 and 1 only |
Non-hot-plug is the fact that reshapes maintenance planning here. A failed drive is not a front-panel swap: the blade comes out of the enclosure and the access panel comes off, so the workload moves before the drive does. HPE built this blade around that assumption, pointing it at SAN-backed virtualisation — the embedded FlexFabric adapter carries FCoE and iSCSI, a Fibre Channel mezzanine carries the rest — and for hypervisors that boot from flash there is an internal SD-HC card slot and an internal USB 2.0 connector as well.
Choosing the Right BL490c G7 Drive
- Count the bays before ordering. There are two, and no cage, backplane or carrier option adds a third inside the blade.
- These are not hot-plug drives. They mount on a baffle above the processors, with no front-access carrier and no hot swap, so plan the outage rather than the swap.
- SATA only, inside. The internal pair runs 3G SATA; SAS reaches this blade through a Smart Array P700m mezzanine and storage that sits outside it.
- Two bays is exactly enough for RAID 1. Mirroring a boot pair needs no add-in card at all, which is the cheapest useful thing these bays do.
- Switch the RAID on before relying on it. The embedded SATA RAID has to be enabled in RBSU first, and array monitoring in the operating system needs HPE's driver.

Hardware RAID on the internal pair is a mezzanine decision — see BL490c G7 storage controllers before ordering drives. Adjacent blades: BL490c G6 hard drives and BL460c G7 hard drives. BL490c G7 Hard Drives FAQ
How many drives does a BL490c G7 hold?
Two. Both are non-hot-plug 2.5-inch SATA bays on a baffle above the processors, and there is no cage or backplane option that adds a third inside the blade.
Are the BL490c G7 drive bays hot-plug?
No. Changing a drive means pulling the blade out of the enclosure and removing the access panel, so the workload has to move first.
What is the maximum internal storage in a BL490c G7?
800GB, from two 400GB SATA solid state drives. HPE also lists 200GB and 100GB drives for the same two bays.
Can I put SAS hard drives in a BL490c G7?
Not in the two internal bays, which are 3G SATA. SAS reaches this blade through an attached storage blade or a Smart Array P700m mezzanine card driving storage outside the blade.
Can I run RAID on the two internal SSDs?
Yes. The embedded chipset SATA controller supports RAID 0 and 1 once it has been enabled in RBSU, and a Smart Array P712m mezzanine card provides hardware RAID on the same pair.
Where do the drives physically sit in this blade?
On a baffle above the processors, in bays numbered 1 and 2. They are reached by taking the access panel off the blade, not from the front of the enclosure.
