HPE ProLiant SL165z G7 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant SL165z G7, new and refurbished. Each tray takes up to two AMD Opteron 6000 series processors, eight-core or twelve-core, for twenty-four cores in 1U and forty-eight in a fully populated z6000 chassis — and every kit listed for this server carries the same 12MB of shared level 3 cache.
SL165z G7 Processor Specifications
- Sockets: two per tray, on the AMD SR5670/SP5100 chipset, with each tray carrying its own system board
- Twelve-core kits: Opteron 6176SE at 2.3GHz, 6174 at 2.2GHz, 6172 at 2.1GHz, 6168 at 1.9GHz, and the 6164HE at 1.7GHz
- Eight-core kits: Opteron 6136 at 2.4GHz, 6134 at 2.3GHz and 6128 at 2.0GHz, plus the 6128HE at 2.0GHz and the 6124HE at 1.8GHz
- Cache: 12MB of shared level 3 cache on every processor listed for this server, eight-core and twelve-core alike
- Power ratings: two figures describe the same part — an Average CPU Power of 105W, 80W or 65W in the specifications, and 140W, 115W or 85W in the kit descriptions
- Platform features: AMD DirectConnect Architecture and PowerNow, with every kit supplied complete with heatsink and fans
The second processor is a memory upgrade as much as a CPU upgrade. With one Opteron fitted, only twelve of the 24 DIMM slots are usable, and HPE's rules say not to populate slots whose processor is absent. Note too that every kit here is quoted twice on power — Average CPU Power in the specifications, a higher figure in the kit description, same chip.
Twelve cores or eight, and at what clock?
| Kit | Cores | Clock | Average CPU Power | Kit rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opteron 6176SE | 12 | 2.3GHz | 105W | 140W |
| Opteron 6174 | 12 | 2.2GHz | 80W | 115W |
| Opteron 6164HE | 12 | 1.7GHz | 65W | 85W |
| Opteron 6136 | 8 | 2.4GHz | 80W | 115W |
| Opteron 6124HE | 8 | 1.8GHz | 65W | 85W |
Core count and clock pull against each other across this list. The 6136 is the fastest kit at 2.4GHz but gives eight cores; the 6176SE gives twelve at 2.3GHz and carries the highest power rating of any part listed for the server. The HE parts are the low power members of each core count, and the 6128 and 6128HE make the point plainly — both run at 2.0GHz with eight cores, and the HE version simply does it inside a smaller power budget.
Choosing the Right SL165z G7 Processor
- A second processor unlocks the other twelve DIMM slots. With one CPU fitted only half of the 24 slots are usable, which is often the real reason to add one.
- Do not fit DIMMs to an empty socket. HPE's population rules say not to install DIMMs if the corresponding processor is not installed.
- Read which wattage figure you are looking at. The specifications quote Average CPU Power while the kit description quotes a higher number for the same processor, so a 65W part and an 85W part can be the same chip.
- The HE parts are not slower at every step. The 6128 and 6128HE both run eight cores at 2.0GHz; only the power rating separates them.
- Size the chassis supplies for both trays. Two twelve-core trays in one z6000 draw from the same Common Slot supplies, so a processor upgrade is a chassis power question too.
Complete Your SL165z G7 Build
Processor choice sets the memory ceiling as much as the core count — see SL165z G7 memory alongside this page, and expect to buy DIMMs with a second CPU rather than after it. Power is the other dependency: see SL165z G7 power supplies, remembering that the supplies serve two trays. SL165z G7 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the SL165z G7 support?
AMD Opteron 6000 series, in eight-core and twelve-core versions, up to two per tray. The twelve-core parts run from the 6176SE at 2.3GHz to the 6164HE at 1.7GHz, and the eight-core parts from the 6136 at 2.4GHz to the 6124HE at 1.8GHz.
How many cores can an SL165z G7 have?
Twenty-four per tray, from two twelve-core Opteron processors. A z6000 chassis holds two trays, so forty-eight cores in 2U of rack space.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. With only one processor installed, half of the 24 DIMM slots are unavailable, so the second CPU is what opens the rest of the memory capacity.
Why are two different wattages quoted for the same Opteron?
HPE quotes Average CPU Power in the specifications - 105W, 80W or 65W - and a higher figure of 140W, 115W or 85W in the processor kit descriptions. They describe the same part.
What does HE mean on these Opteron processors?
It marks the low power member of a core count. The 6164HE, 6128HE and 6124HE all carry the lowest power rating in their class, and the 6128HE matches the standard 6128 at 2.0GHz while doing so.
Do SL165z G7 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor kit listed for this server comes complete with heatsink and fans.
