A processor here buys twelve DIMM slots and a block of PCIe slots as well as cores. Each socket brings 12 of the 48 DIMM slots with it, and the riser slots are wired to particular processors, so a two-processor DL580 Gen10 is short of memory capacity and expansion as well as compute. Sockets three and four also need the CPU mezzanine board fitted first.

- Sockets three and four are a board, not just a chip. The CPU mezzanine board comes first, and a 2nd generation four-socket build needs the Version 2 board.
- The generation decides the memory. 1st generation parts take 2666 MT/s kits and 2nd generation take 2933 MT/s, so a processor change can strand a memory configuration.
- M and L suffixes are memory-tier parts. Buy them where a socket must address more than the standard 768GB.
- Two UPI links or three matters at four sockets. A 51xx or 52xx machine runs a ring, not a cross bar.
- Check power and cooling against the wattage. Four 205W processors is not four 85W parts.

Which processors does the DL580 Gen10 support?
Intel Xeon Scalable processors, one to four of them: 1st generation Platinum 81xx and Gold 61xx and 51xx, or 2nd generation 82xx, 62xx and 52xx. The second digit of the model number tells you which generation a part belongs to.
Can I add a third and fourth processor to a DL580 Gen10?
Only with the HPE DL5x0 Gen10 CPU Mezzanine Board Kit fitted, since sockets three and four are carried on that board rather than the system board. A four-socket build using 2nd generation processors calls for the CPU Version 2 Mezzanine Board Kit.
What does a partially populated DL580 Gen10 lose?
Memory slots and PCIe slots as well as cores. Each processor brings twelve DIMM slots with it, and the riser slots are wired to specific processors, so a two-processor machine reaches 24 DIMMs and only part of the sixteen-slot expansion maximum.

What is the difference between two and three UPI links?
How the four sockets are wired together. Platinum 81xx, Gold 61xx and the 2nd generation 82xx and 62xx parts have three UPI links and connect every processor to every other directly; 51xx and 52xx parts have two, and form a ring in which processors 1 and 3, and 2 and 4, are not directly connected.
What do the M and L suffixes mean on these processors?
They are memory tiers. An M part addresses more memory per socket than a standard part, and on 2nd generation processors an L part goes higher still. Without one, a socket is limited to the standard capacity.
