  • Hyper-Threading: on every processor except the E5-2603 and E5-2609, in either v3 or v4

Processors go in as a matched pair, within one generation. Up to two are supported, mixing different processor models is not supported, and mixing E5-2600 v3 with E5-2600 v4 is not supported at all. The orderable field kit is the -B21; the -L21 is factory-integration only. The second processor is also what brings the secondary PCIe riser, the other 12 DIMM slots and two more fans into use.

That column split is the distinction to get right, and the usual way a Gen9 order goes wrong: a v4 kit will not join a v3 server, or the reverse. Because v4 processors require PC4-2400T memory kits, changing generation is a processor and memory decision together. The second processor also brings the secondary PCIe riser into use, unlocks the other 12 DIMM slots and adds two fans.

Choosing the Right DL360 Gen9 Processor

  • Buy to the generation in the sockets. Check the part number on the installed heat spreader first — v3 and v4 look alike and will not run together.
  • -B21 is the field upgrade; -L21 is not. HPE builds two-processor servers from one -L21 kit plus one matching -B21, and the -L21 is factory-integration only — never a field upgrade. A processor added later is the -B21.
  • Both sockets take the same model. An upgrade is a matched pair, not a spare CPU dropped into the empty socket.
  • Watch heat sinks and fans. Parts up to 120W ship with a standard heat sink, parts above 120W with the High Performance heat sink, except the E5-2690 v4; the second processor kit brings two more fans.
  • Cores or clock, not both. The 22-core E5-2699 v4 runs 2.2GHz at 145W; the 4-core E5-2637 v4 runs 3.5GHz at 135W.

What processors does the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 series processors on the Intel C610 chipset, in up to two sockets. The v3 list runs from the 4-core E5-2637 v3 to the 18-core E5-2699 v3; the v4 list runs from the 4-core E5-2623 v4 to the 22-core E5-2699 v4 and E5-2699A v4.

Can I mix E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors in a DL360 Gen9?
No. The QuickSpecs state flatly that mixing E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processors is not supported, and separately that mixing different processor models is not supported. Both sockets must hold the same generation and the same model.

What is the maximum core count of the DL360 Gen9?
Forty-four cores, from two 22-core E5-2699 v4 or E5-2699A v4 processors. With the earlier E5-2600 v3 series the maximum is 36 cores, since those parts top out at 18 cores each.

What is the difference between a -B21 and a -L21 processor kit?
The -B21 is the orderable option kit you can fit in the field. The -L21 is a factory-integration part: HPE builds a two-processor server from one -L21 kit plus one matching -B21, and the -L21 is not sold as a field upgrade.

Does the second processor change what the DL360 Gen9 can do?
Yes, in three ways. It is required for the secondary PCIe riser and its x16 slot, it brings the other 12 DIMM slots into use, and it raises the fan count from five to seven - the second processor option kit contains two fans.

Which DL360 Gen9 processors do not support Hyper-Threading?
Four of them. HPE states that all processors support Hyper-Threading except the E5-2609 v4, E5-2609 v3, E5-2603 v4 and E5-2603 v3, which are the entry parts in each family.
