HPE ProLiant DL165 G7 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant DL165 G7, new and refurbished. This is an AMD Opteron platform with 24 DIMM slots — twelve per processor, four channels each and three slots per channel — and the first decision on any upgrade is Registered against Unbuffered, because HPE's population rules for this server say not to mix the two.

DL165 G7 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), in PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including PC3L low-power parts
  • Slots: 24 in total, three per channel across four channels per processor and eight channels per server; with one processor installed, only half the slots are available
  • Maximum registered: 384GB across all 24 slots, or 256GB built from one 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 module plus two 8GB modules per channel, which runs at 800MHz
  • Maximum unbuffered: 64GB from sixteen 4GB modules — UDIMMs fill only two slots per channel, and the middle slot has to stay empty
  • Rank limits: eight ranks per channel, and one quad-rank DIMM per channel which has to sit in the centre socket
  • Speeds and protection: DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1066 kits are listed here and DDR3-1600 is supported only behind 6200 series Opteron processors; Advanced ECC across all models

Registered and Unbuffered are not to be mixed, and the gap between them is not small. Registered DIMMs fill all 24 slots and reach 384GB; Unbuffered fill only two slots per channel, sixteen in total, and stop at 64GB. Converting a server from one type to the other means replacing every module in it, so check what is fitted before ordering a single kit.

Should you fit Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs?

Slots that can be filled2416
DIMMs per channelUp to threeTwo, middle slot empty
Maximum capacity384GB64GB
Kit sizes stocked2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB2GB, 4GB

Registered is the only route to capacity on this server: it reaches 384GB where Unbuffered stops at 64GB, and every pre-configured DL165 G7 left the factory with Registered DDR3 in it. Unbuffered kits are worth buying only to top up a machine already running them, because switching a server from one type to the other means replacing every module in it.

Choosing the Right DL165 G7 Memory

  • Check which type is fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered are not to be mixed here, so a single wrong module leaves the server refusing to post rather than simply running slower.
  • The whole server drops to the slowest module in it. Mixing DIMM speeds is allowed, but the memory bus defaults to the lowest clock rate of any DIMM installed — HPE is explicit that this applies even when the slow module sits on the other processor.
  • Filling the third slot on a channel costs speed. At three DIMMs per channel, 8GB PC3-10600R and PC3-8500R Registered modules run at 800MHz; one or two per channel hold the higher clock.
  • Quad-rank modules go one per channel, in the centre socket. That is why the 16GB PC3-8500 quad-rank kit reaches eight of the 24 slots on its own, and why the 256GB configuration pairs it with 8GB modules.
  • Every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM. A 96GB upgrade is twelve 8GB kits, not one boxed set.

The processor decides what the memory can do — see DL165 G7 processors, and note that the second CPU is what makes the other twelve slots usable at all. DL165 G7 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in a DL165 G7?
384GB with Registered DIMMs across all 24 slots. Unbuffered DIMMs reach 64GB, because only two of the three slots on each channel can take them.

Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in a DL165 G7?
No. HPE's DDR3 population guidelines for this server say not to mix UDIMMs with RDIMMs. Whichever type is fitted is what an upgrade has to match, and converting a server means replacing every module.

How many memory slots does the DL165 G7 have?
Twenty-four, twelve per processor. Each processor has four memory channels with three slots on each. With one processor installed, only twelve of them are usable.

Why is my DL165 G7 memory running slower than the modules are rated for?
Two rules do it. Mixing speeds drops the whole bus to the slowest DIMM in the server, even across processors, and filling the third slot on a channel takes 8GB Registered modules down to 800MHz.

Where do quad-rank DIMMs go in a DL165 G7?
One per channel, in the centre socket, within a limit of eight ranks per channel. That is why the 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 kit populates eight slots rather than all 24.

Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit for the DL165 G7 is a single DIMM, so filling all 24 slots means 24 kits.
