HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10, new and refurbished. The tower already has four Gigabit ports on board from the embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 369i Adapter, so an add-in card here is about reaching 10, 25 or 100 Gigabit, moving to fibre, or going past four ports.

ML350 Gen10 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: an HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 369i Adapter, four ports in total; HPE notes it does not support 100MB/s or 10MB/s speeds
  • Management ports: a dedicated 1Gb iLO 5 remote management port and a front iLO Service Port, both separate from the four data ports
  • Expansion: a maximum of eight PCIe 3.0 slots, all full-height and full-length
  • Slot wiring: slots 1 and 3 are x16, slots 2 and 4 are x4 electrical in x8 connectors with slot 4 routed from the chipset, and slots 5 to 8 — x16, x8, x16, x8 — arrive only with a second processor
  • Speeds available: 1 Gigabit BASE-T in two and four-port form, 10 Gigabit in BASE-T and SFP+, 25 Gigabit over SFP28, and 100 Gigabit over QSFP28
  • Cooling requirement: HPE requires the Redundant Fan Cage Kit for the higher-end adapters, naming the 10GbE BASE-T BCM57416, the 25 Gigabit SFP28 cards, the 100 Gigabit QSFP28 card and the InfiniBand and Omni-Path adapters

Count the slots the tower actually has before choosing a card. Eight PCIe 3.0 slots sounds generous, but slots 5 to 8 belong to the second processor, so a single-processor machine has four — and two of those four are x4 electrically inside x8 connectors. Slots 1, 3, 5 and 7 are the x16 ones, which is where a 25 or 100 Gigabit adapter belongs.

Which Slot Should the Card Go In?

SlotElectrical widthFed bySuits
1 and 3x16Processor 125 and 100 Gigabit adapters, and GPUs
2x4 in an x8 connectorProcessor 1Gigabit and modest 10 Gigabit cards
4x4 in an x8 connector, from the chipsetProcessor 1Gigabit cards, or the SAS expander in a 24 SFF build
5 and 7x16Processor 2High-bandwidth adapters on a two-processor tower
6 and 8x8Processor 210 Gigabit adapters on a two-processor tower

Count the slots the server actually has before choosing a card. Eight sounds generous, but slots 5 to 8 belong to the second processor, so a single-processor tower has four — and two of those four are x4 electrically however wide the connector looks. A 25 or 100 Gigabit adapter dropped into slot 2 or slot 4 will link, and will then run against a quarter of the lanes it expects.

Choosing the Right ML350 Gen10 Network Adapter

  • Check what you already have first. Four Gigabit ports are on the board, and the iLO 5 management port is separate from them, so an upgrade only earns its slot above 1 Gigabit or beyond four ports.
  • Put the fast card in an x16 slot. Slots 1, 3, 5 and 7 are the wide ones; slots 2 and 4 are x4 electrically in x8 connectors.
  • Budget the fan kit with the adapter. HPE requires the Redundant Fan Cage Kit for the 25 Gigabit, 100 Gigabit, InfiniBand and Omni-Path cards, and for the 10GbE BASE-T BCM57416.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+, SFP28 and QSFP28 cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
  • Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP28 card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics in between.

Half the slots come with the second processor — check ML350 Gen10 processors if slots 5 to 8 are the ones you were counting on, and power supplies if the fan cage kit is going in too. ML350 Gen10 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does an ML350 Gen10 have as standard?
Four. The embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 369i Adapter provides them, and a dedicated iLO 5 management port plus a front iLO Service Port sit separately from the four data ports.

How many PCIe slots does the ML350 Gen10 have?
A maximum of eight, all PCIe 3.0 and all full-height, full-length. Slots 1 to 4 run from the first processor and slots 5 to 8 from the second, so a single-processor tower has four.

Which slots are full x16?
Slots 1, 3, 5 and 7. Slots 6 and 8 are x8, and slots 2 and 4 are x4 electrically in x8 connectors, with slot 4 routed from the chipset.

Does the ML350 Gen10 support 25 or 100 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through add-in cards. HPE lists 10/25Gb SFP28 adapters and a 100Gb QSFP28 adapter for this server, and requires the Redundant Fan Cage Kit when any of them is fitted.

Why would a network card need a fan kit?
Cooling. HPE names higher-end network adapters, InfiniBand cards, GPUs and advanced PCIe accelerators among the options that require the Redundant Fan Cage Kit with its four extra hot-plug fans.

Are cables included with SFP+ and SFP28 adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are bought separately from the adapter.
