HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 Processors

HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 Processors

The HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen11 is a single-socket server, so a processor change here is a replacement rather than an addition. There is no second socket and no second bank of DIMM slots waiting behind one. What the board takes, on the Intel C262 chipset, is the Intel Xeon 6300 series, the Intel Xeon E-2400 series and the Intel Pentium G7400.

ML30 Gen11 Processor Specifications

  • Socket: one, on the Intel C262 chipset; HPE supports only one processor, and the configure-to-order chassis do not include one as standard
  • Xeon 6300 series: from the 6377P at 3.1GHz with twelve cores, 36MB of L3 cache and 95W, down to the 6315P at 2.8GHz with four cores, 12MB and 55W
  • Xeon E-2400 series: from the E-2488 at 3.2GHz with eight cores, 24MB of L3 cache and 95W, down to the E-2414 at 2.6GHz with four cores, 12MB and 55W
  • Pentium: the G7400 at 3.7GHz, two cores, 6MB of cache and 46W; HPE notes it does not comply with Energy Star 4.0
  • Memory clock: the QuickSpecs lists DDR5 at 4400 MT/s against every processor in the table, so on this platform the processor choice does not separate the line-up on memory speed
  • Cooling and graphics: any processor at 95W TDP requires the ML30 Gen11 CPU High Performance Heat Sink Kit, and HPE states the product does not support processor graphics — video comes from the integrated 1920 x 1200 output or an add-in accelerator

One socket, so a processor change is a swap rather than an upgrade. There is no second socket on the ML30 Gen11 and no second bank of DIMM slots behind one — all four are live with the single processor installed. The range runs from the two-core Pentium G7400 at 46W to the twelve-core Xeon 6377P at 95W, and any 95W part requires the CPU High Performance Heat Sink Kit.

Twelve cores or a higher clock?

ClassExampleCores and L3 cachePower
Xeon 6300, top of range6377P 3.1GHz12 cores, 36MB95W
Xeon 6300, eight-core6357P 3.0GHz8 cores, 24MB80W
Xeon E-2400, eight-coreE-2488 3.2GHz8 cores, 24MB95W
Xeon E-2400, high clockE-2486 3.5GHz6 cores, 18MB95W
Pentium, entryG7400 3.7GHz2 cores, 6MB46W

The spread on this platform is narrow by ProLiant standards: two cores to twelve, and 46W to 95W across the whole documented range. Cores and cache are what the Xeon 6300 series buys over the E-2400 series, not clock — the fastest base frequency in the table belongs to the two-core Pentium G7400 at 3.7GHz, and the fastest Xeon is the six-core E-2486 at 3.5GHz. Every processor HPE documents here is a factory-integrated (FIO) option, normally specified with the server rather than fitted afterwards.

Choosing the Right ML30 Gen11 Processor

  • One socket means a swap, not an upgrade path. Nothing is unlocked by a second processor here, and all four DIMM slots are already live with the single processor installed.
  • 95W parts need the high performance heatsink. HPE requires the ML30 Gen11 CPU High Performance Heat Sink Kit for any processor with a 95W TDP, so the thermal solution is part of the decision rather than an accessory.
  • The processor does not set the memory speed. Unlike older ML30 generations, every processor listed for this server runs DDR5 at 4400 MT/s, so a lower-wattage part does not cost memory bandwidth.
  • There is no processor graphics fallback. HPE states the product does not support processor graphics; a display comes from the integrated iLO video or from an RTX A400 or A1000 accelerator, and fitting either accelerator disables the iLO video port.
  • Twelve cores and 95W is the ceiling. A workload that has outgrown that has outgrown the chassis rather than the processor.

All four DIMM slots are live with the one processor this board takes — see ML30 Gen11 memory for what that ceiling looks like, and power supplies for the 95W end of the range. ML30 Gen11 Processors FAQ

How many processors does an ML30 Gen11 take?
One. HPE supports only one processor in this server, so a processor change is a replacement rather than an addition, and there is no second set of DIMM slots to unlock by adding one.

Which processors does the ML30 Gen11 support?
Intel Xeon 6300 series parts from the 6377P down to the 6315P, Xeon E-2400 series parts from the E-2488 down to the E-2414, and the two-core Pentium G7400, all on the Intel C262 chipset.

What is the highest core count in an ML30 Gen11?
Twelve, on the Xeon 6377P at 3.1GHz with 36MB of L3 cache and a 95W TDP. The Xeon E-2400 series tops out at eight cores, on the E-2488 and E-2478.

Does the processor affect memory speed on an ML30 Gen11?
Not on this platform. The QuickSpecs lists DDR5 at 4400 MT/s against every supported processor, so the choice of part does not change the memory clock the way it does on older generations.

Do 95W processors need a different heatsink?
Yes. HPE requires the ML30 Gen11 CPU High Performance Heat Sink Kit for any processor with a TDP of 95W, which covers the top of both the Xeon 6300 and Xeon E-2400 ranges.

Can I fit a graphics card in an ML30 Gen11?
HPE documents the NVIDIA RTX A400 4GB and RTX A1000 8GB accelerators for this server. Installing either disables the iLO video port, so the console is reached through the iLO web interface.
