HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Storage Controllers

HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Storage Controllers

Genuine HPE storage controllers for the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11, new and refurbished, tested for compatibility before shipping. The ML110 Gen11 has an 8-port SATA controller embedded with Intel VROC Hybrid RAID, and HPE lists six Gen11 Tri-Mode controllers above it — three models, each in an OCP form that takes no PCIe slot and a PCIe plug-in form — plus the E208e-p for external SAS. The choice is about cache, lane count and where the card sits.

ML110 Gen11 Storage Controller Specifications

  • Embedded: 8-port SATA controller with Intel VROC Hybrid RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10, off by default and UEFI only; HPE describes each LFF cage as a separate drive group, the SFF cage as two groups (bays 1 to 4 and 5 to 8), and the two onboard M.2 SATA drives as a third
  • Tri-Mode controllers listed: HPE MR216i-o and MR216i-p Gen11, x16 lanes, no cache, RAID 0/1/10, up to 16 drives; HPE MR408i-o and MR408i-p Gen11, x8 lanes, 4GB cache, up to 8 drives; HPE MR416i-o and MR416i-p Gen11, x16 lanes, 8GB cache, up to 16 drives — all SPDM-capable
  • External SAS: HPE Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10, 8 external lanes, no cache, up to 8 external SAS/SATA drives
  • OCP placement: the -o (OROC) controllers are supported only in OCP slot 1 and do not occupy a PCIe expansion slot; no OCP enablement kit is required for them
  • Cache protection: HPE requires the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery with 260mm cable (P01367-B21) or a Smart Hybrid Capacitor with 260mm cable (P02381-B21 or P65042-B21) with the MR408i and MR416i, and states the 260mm kits cannot be selected together
  • Not supported: mixing MR (MegaRAID) and SR (SmartRAID) internal controllers; HPE also notes the E208e (SR) and the MR controllers use different RAID configuration tools
  • Cabling: the LFF PCIe Cable Kit for a -p controller with the LFF cage, the SFF OROC Cable Kit for the embedded or an -o controller with the SFF cage, and the SFF PCIe Cable Kit for a -p controller with the SFF cage, all listed on the parts page
  • Boot device: HPE NS204i-u Gen11 NVMe Hot Plug Boot Optimized Storage Device with its ML110 Gen11 enablement kit, listed on the parts page; HPE requires the Redundant Fan Kit with it and states it is not supported on the non-hot-plug chassis

Cached controllers need a battery or capacitor, and the OCP versions take OCP slot 1. HPE requires the 96W Smart Storage Battery or a Smart Hybrid Capacitor, with the 260mm cable, for the MR408i and MR416i in either form, and allows only one of those kits per server. The -o controllers are supported only in OCP slot 1 and leave both PCIe 5.0 slots free; the cacheless MR216i needs no battery and is also the controller that gives an internal LTO tape drive its port.

Which ML110 Gen11 controller do you need?

ControllerLanes / drivesCacheBest fit
Embedded SATA + VROC8 SATA portsNoneSATA-only builds; RAID 0/1/5/10 in software; the only path on the non-hot-plug chassis
MR216i-o / MR216i-px16, up to 16 drivesNoneSAS, SATA or NVMe with RAID 0/1/10 and no battery; also the port for an internal LTO tape drive
MR408i-o / MR408i-px8, up to 8 drives4GBCached hardware RAID including parity levels for a single 8-bay cage; needs a battery or capacitor
MR416i-o / MR416i-px16, up to 16 drives8GBCached hardware RAID across a full 16 SFF build; needs a battery or capacitor
E208e-p SR Gen108 external lanesNoneAn external SAS enclosure, alongside an internal MR controller

Two decisions cover most builds. First, cache or not: the MR216i is the cacheless choice for RAID 1 and 10, the MR408i and MR416i add write-back cache and parity RAID with a battery or capacitor. Second, -o or -p: the OCP versions sit in OCP slot 1 and leave both PCIe 5.0 slots free, so on a server that will also carry a 100GbE adapter or a GPU they are the ones to choose.

Choosing the Right ML110 Gen11 Storage Controller

  • Prefer the OCP (-o) versions. They take OCP slot 1 rather than a PCIe slot, need no enablement kit, and HPE lists the same three controllers in both forms.
  • Size lanes to the cage count. The x8 MR408i covers up to 8 drives; a 16 SFF build or a mixed LFF + SFF build takes the x16 MR216i or MR416i.
  • Order cache protection with cached controllers. HPE requires the 96W battery or a hybrid capacitor, all with the 260mm cable, for the MR408i and MR416i — and only one of the three kits per server.
  • Order the matching cable kit. LFF PCIe, SFF OROC or SFF PCIe, by controller form and cage type.
  • Do not mix MR and SR internally. HPE states it is not supported; the E208e-p is an SR controller for external storage and can sit alongside an internal MR controller.
  • Plan the tape drive's port. An internal LTO drive needs one available port on an MR216i-o, MR216i-p or MR408i-o, per HPE, plus the LTO Cable Kit.

A controller is only as useful as the drives behind it: see ML110 Gen11 drives for the SAS, SATA and M.2 options by chassis, then memory, processors, networking adapters and power supplies, or the full ML110 Gen11 parts listing for the batteries, capacitors, boot device and cable kits. The same MR216i, MR408i and MR416i Gen11 controllers serve the ML350 Gen11; the previous generation is under ML110 Gen10 storage controllers. Background: how the Gen10 and Gen11 generations compare. Every model we stock is indexed under HPE parts by server model.

ML110 Gen11 Storage Controllers FAQ

Does the ML110 Gen11 need a RAID controller?
Not for SATA drives. An 8-port SATA controller with Intel VROC Hybrid RAID is embedded on every model and supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 once enabled, in UEFI mode. A controller is needed for SAS drives, for cached hardware RAID, for an internal LTO tape drive, or for external SAS storage.

Which storage controllers does HPE list for the ML110 Gen11?
Six Gen11 Tri-Mode controllers - the MR216i, MR408i and MR416i, each as an OCP (-o) card and a PCIe (-p) card - plus the Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10 for external storage. The MR216i has no cache, the MR408i has 4GB and the MR416i has 8GB.

What is the difference between the -o and -p versions of the ML110 Gen11 controllers?
The same controller in two form factors. The -o is an OCP card for OCP slot 1 that does not occupy a PCIe expansion slot and needs no enablement kit; the -p is a PCIe plug-in card. HPE states OROC controllers are supported only in OCP slot 1.

Do the ML110 Gen11 cached controllers need a battery?
Yes. HPE requires the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery with 260mm cable, or a Smart Hybrid Capacitor with 260mm cable, with the MR408i and MR416i in either form, and states the 260mm cable kits cannot be selected together. The cacheless MR216i needs none.

Can I use an MR controller and the E208e-p together in an ML110 Gen11?
Yes. HPE's restriction is on mixing MR and SR controllers for internal storage. The E208e-p is for external storage only, and HPE notes that the two families use different RAID configuration tools.

Which controller do I need for an internal tape drive in an ML110 Gen11?
One with a free port: HPE states an internal LTO tape drive requires the ML110 Gen11 LTO Cable Kit and one available port from an MR216i-o, MR216i-p or MR408i-o controller.
