The 550W ATX supply blocks the redundant fan kit. The decision is not really about watts. A 550W ATX machine is a single-supply machine that cannot take the redundant fan kit, and moving away from that costs the enablement kit plus two matching supplies rather than one. HPE settles the question for some builds anyway: the redundant fan and the 800W redundant power supply are both required when a second drive cage runs 15K SAS drives, when a SAS SSD is fitted, and where the A3 extended operating environment has to be met.
Choosing the Right ML110 Gen10 Power Supply
- Read what is fitted before ordering anything. An ATX chassis and a Flex Slot chassis are different power arrangements, and one supply is not a substitute for the other.
- Redundancy is three purchases, not one. A 1+1 configuration is the enablement kit plus two matching Flex Slot supplies; a single supply is not redundant whatever it is rated at.
- Matching means all three properties. Input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating all have to agree, so two 800W units are still a mismatch if one is Platinum and the other Titanium.
- Some storage choices decide this for you. A second drive cage with 15K SAS drives, or any SAS SSD, brings the redundant fan and the 800W redundant supply with it.
- Size to the configuration, not to the ceiling. HPE publishes a Power Advisor for sizing a specific build, and a supply running far below its rating sits away from its best efficiency point.
