HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 Drives

The HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 takes 2.5-inch SFF drives in its 8SFF models and 3.5-inch LFF drives in its 4LFF models, in SAS or SATA. Mixing drive cage types is not allowed. HPE's SFF drives are SFF SC; its hot-plug LFF hard drives are LFF LP and its LFF SSD LFF LPC. The 4LFF Non Hot Plug models take SATA drives only, on the S100i. The controller decides SAS or SATA: the embedded S100i runs SATA only, and a Smart Array controller runs SAS and SATA.

Which drives fit the ML110 Gen10

The drive cage sets the bay size and hot-plug or not, and the controller decides SAS or SATA. HPE's maximum counts:

SFF or LFF? How to tell

  1. Count the drive bays. 8SFF models have 8 SFF bays, upgradable to 16. 4LFF models have 4 LFF bays, hot-plug or non-hot-plug, upgradable to 8.
  2. Match the server's product number to the product numbers shown here. 872305-B21 is the 4LFF Non Hot Plug CTO model, 872307-B21 the 4LFF CTO model and 872309-B21 the 8SFF CTO model. Pre-configured model names say 4LFF-NHP, 4LFF or 8SFF.
  3. Check the storage controller. Models with the embedded S100i run SATA only. The P21449 model has a P408i-p Smart Array controller, which runs SAS and SATA.

Three rules before you order

Match the carrier to the bay

SFF bays take SFF SC drives. Hot-plug LFF bays take LFF LP hard drives and the LFF LPC SSD. Mixing drive cage types is not allowed.

The controller sets the interface

The embedded S100i runs SATA drives only, in UEFI mode only, and is off by default. SAS drives need a Smart Array controller such as the E208i-p or P408i-p. Non-hot-plug SATA drives are limited to the S100i.

Plan the fan and power supply

HPE requires a Redundant Fan with an 800W Redundant Power Supply when a SAS SSD is installed, or when a second HDD cage is installed and the SAS HDDs run at 15K RPM. ATX power supplies do not support the redundant fan option.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10?

SFF SC SAS and SATA drives in the 8SFF models, LFF LP hard drives and the LFF LPC SSD in the hot-plug 4LFF models, and SATA drives in the 4LFF Non Hot Plug models. HPE also lists a SATA M.2 SSD with its PCIe enablement kit.

Do drives from an ML110 Gen11 fit the ML110 Gen10?

Some part numbers appear in both QuickSpecs: 881781-B21 (LFF LP) and 801882-B21 (LFF RW) are in the ML110 Gen11 QuickSpecs too. Check the part number against HPE's list for the ML110 Gen10.

Does the ML110 Gen10 support NVMe drives?

HPE lists no NVMe drives for the drive bays. The only NVMe device in the document is the NS204i-p OS boot device, a PCIe card.

How many drives does the ML110 Gen10 hold?

Up to 16 SFF or 8 LFF hot-plug drives, with 8 SFF or 4 LFF bays as standard. The non-hot-plug models hold up to 8 LFF SATA drives. Mixing drive cage types is not allowed.

Can I run SATA drives without a RAID controller?

Yes. The embedded S100i software RAID supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 on SATA drives connected to the embedded SATA ports. It operates in UEFI mode only, is off by default and only supports Windows. It supports 10 ports, as 2 more ports serve the M.2 option.

What boot and optical options does the ML110 Gen10 have?

HPE lists the NS204i-p NVMe OS boot device, which supports UEFI mode only, and a SATA M.2 SSD on the Universal SATA 6G AIC HHHL M.2 SSD Enablement Kit (878783-B21). One optical bay takes a 9.5mm SATA DVD-ROM or DVD-RW.
