HPE ProLiant DL80 Gen9 Power Supplies
Genuine HPE power hardware for the HPE ProLiant DL80 Gen9, new and refurbished. Redundancy works differently on the Gen9 entry servers than on the larger ProLiants: this 2U chassis has a single power supply bay, so a redundant build is a power backplane carrying up to two AC power input modules, and HPE makes that backplane mandatory with the module.
DL80 Gen9 Power Supply Specifications
- Redundant architecture: an RPS power backplane plus AC power input modules; the backplane is mandatorily needed with the module, and each backplane supports up to two modules
- Redundant module: the 900W AC 240VDC power input module, 80 Plus Gold at up to 92%, on a standard C14 inlet taking 100 to 240V AC at 47 to 63 Hz as well as 240V DC; the module listed here is rated 800W Gold in a redundant pair and 900W standing alone
- Non-redundant alternative: the 550W FIO power supply, 80 Plus Silver at up to 89%, rated 550W steady state at both 100 and 200 VAC, and a factory-installed option only
- Failover behaviour: redundant AC power input modules do not share power — module 1 is the primary and module 2 is the backup
- Mixing: not supported. All supplies must be of the same input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating, or the server can report an error or behave unpredictably
- Cooling: a single-processor server runs two hot-swap fans non-redundant and four redundant, a two-processor server four and five; each riser kit ships with a fan of its own
A second power supply will not make this server redundant. The DL80 Gen9 has one power supply bay, so redundancy means an RPS power backplane carrying up to two AC power input modules, and HPE makes that backplane mandatory. The modules do not share load: module 1 is primary, module 2 the backup.
Do You Need the Backplane as Well as the Module?
| Non-redundant | Redundant | |
|---|---|---|
| Supply | 550W FIO power supply | AC 240VDC power input module |
| Efficiency | 80 Plus Silver, up to 89% | 80 Plus Gold, up to 92% |
| Backplane | Not used | Required |
| Modules fitted | One | Up to two per backplane |
| Load sharing | Not applicable | None: module 1 primary, module 2 backup |
Usually yes, and it is the thing that catches people out. A DL80 Gen9 running a single 550W supply cannot be made redundant by buying a second one, because the chassis has one supply bay and redundancy here means the backplane and the modules that mount on it. Where the backplane is fitted, a second matching module finishes the job.
Choosing the Right DL80 Gen9 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed unit first. Input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating all have to match across the server, so what is fitted today is the specification.
- Redundancy needs the backplane, not just a second module. HPE documents the RPS power backplane as mandatory with the power input module.
- Size against one module, not two. The pair does not share load, so the primary module alone has to carry the configuration.
- Count the drives as well as the processors. Twelve spinning LFF drives and two 105W processors is a different budget from an entry single-processor machine, and HPE publishes a Power Advisor.
- Fans are ordered separately from power. The redundant fan kit carries two fans, the -B21 second-processor kits bring two more, and every riser kit ships with one.

DL80 Gen9 Power Supplies FAQ
Can I mix power supplies in a DL80 Gen9?
No. HPE states that all power supplies must be of the same input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating. Non-matching supplies can produce an error message or operational issues.
Do I need a power backplane to make a DL80 Gen9 redundant?
Yes. This chassis has a single power supply bay, so the redundant AC power input module is mandatorily paired with an RPS power backplane, which supports up to two modules.
Do the two power modules share the load?
No. HPE documents that redundant AC power input modules do not share power: module 1 is the primary and module 2 the backup, so the pair gives failover rather than extra capacity.
How efficient are the DL80 Gen9 power supplies?
The AC 240VDC power input module is 80 Plus Gold certified with an efficiency rating of up to 92 percent. The non-redundant 550W supply is 80 Plus Silver at up to 89 percent.
What input voltage does the DL80 Gen9 accept?
A rated line voltage of 100 to 240 VAC at 47 to 63 Hz. The power input module also supports 240V DC and uses a standard C14 inlet.
How many fans does a DL80 Gen9 have?
Two hot-swap fans on a non-redundant single-processor server and four when fan redundancy is added. A two-processor server runs four non-redundant and five when redundant, and each riser kit ships with a fan.
