HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Drives

The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 takes SFF drives on the Smart Carrier (SC) in SAS, SATA or NVMe, LFF drives in SAS or SATA in the 8LFF and 12LFF models, and SATA M.2 SSDs. The 8SFF BC models, with a Broadcom MegaRAID controller, take Basic Carrier (BC) SAS and SATA drives instead. The controller decides the interface: the embedded S100i runs SATA drives only, an HPE Smart Array controller adds SAS, and NVMe drives need an NVMe or Premium drive cage and an NVMe riser.

Which drives fit the DL380 Gen10

The carrier decides which SFF drives fit; the controller or the NVMe cage decides the interface. HPE's maximum counts:

SC, BC or LFF? How to tell

  1. Count the front bays. Eight SFF bays is an 8SFF model, which takes more 8SFF drive boxes for 16 or 24 SFF. Twenty-four SFF bays is a 24SFF model. Eight LFF bays with a Universal Media Bay is an 8LFF model; twelve LFF bays is a 12LFF model.
  2. Match the server's product number to the product numbers shown here. P56969-B21 and P56970-B21 are the 8SFF BC models, which take Basic Carrier (BC) drives; the other models take Smart Carrier (SC) drives.
  3. Check the storage controller. A Broadcom MegaRAID MR416i or MR216i runs BC drives only. An HPE Smart Array E208i, P408i or P816i runs SC drives in SAS or SATA. With neither, the embedded S100i runs SATA drives only.

Three rules before you order

Match the carrier: SC or BC

Every DL380 Gen10 model except the 8SFF BC models takes Smart Carrier (SC) drives. The 8SFF BC models (P56969-B21, P56970-B21) take Basic Carrier (BC) drives with a Broadcom MegaRAID controller. HPE says SC drives will not function with Broadcom controllers, Smart Array controllers only support Smart Carrier drives, and configurations must not mix BC and SC drives.

The controller sets the interface

The embedded S100i uses SATA ports and supports up to 12 SATA-only devices; more than 8 need the SAS 3POS Cable Kit (826709-B21). SAS drives need an HPE Smart Array controller, or a Broadcom MegaRAID controller on the 8SFF BC models. NVMe drives need an NVMe or Premium drive cage and an NVMe riser, and HPE Smart Array controllers do not support them.

Add the High Performance Fan Kit

HPE requires the High Performance Fan Kit (867810-B21) for rear drives and NVMe configurations, and when Box 1, 2 and 3 are populated. The 12LFF and 24SFF models ship with high performance fans as standard.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10?

SFF drives on the Smart Carrier (SC) in SAS, SATA or NVMe; LFF SAS or SATA drives in the 8LFF and 12LFF models; and SATA M.2 SSDs on the primary riser or in an SCM dual M.2 carrier. The 8SFF BC models take Basic Carrier (BC) SAS and SATA drives instead. Which interfaces work depends on the controller.

Do drives from a DL380 Gen9 or DL380 Gen10 Plus fit the DL380 Gen10?

HPE lists SFF Smart Carrier (SC) drives for the DL380 Gen9 too, and some part numbers, such as 881457-B21, appear in both documents. The DL380 Gen10 Plus QuickSpecs lists Basic Carrier (BC) drives; the DL380 Gen10 takes BC drives only in the 8SFF BC models, and only those HPE lists for it. Check that HPE lists the part number for the DL380 Gen10.

Does the DL380 Gen10 support NVMe drives?

Yes, with an NVMe drive cage (826689-B21 or, on the 8LFF model, 873781-B21), the Premium cage (826690-B21) or, for 2 front drives in the Universal Media Bay of SFF models, the 2SFF Premium kit (826687-B21), plus an NVMe riser and the High Performance Fan Kit. The SFF chassis takes up to 20 NVMe drives. HPE Smart Array controllers do not support NVMe, NVMe is not supported with MegaRAID controllers on the 8SFF BC models, and the Xeon Gold 6250, 6250L, 6252 and 6256 are not supported with NVMe SSDs.

How many drives does the DL380 Gen10 hold?

Up to 30 SFF drives (24 front, 6 rear) in the 24SFF model, or up to 19 LFF drives (12 front, 4 mid-plane, 3 rear) plus 2 SFF rear in the 12LFF model, by HPE's count. The primary riser adds two M.2 SSDs.

Can I run SATA drives without a RAID controller?

Yes. Every model comes with the embedded S100i software RAID, with support for 12 drives on its SATA ports; more than 8 SATA devices need the SAS 3POS Cable Kit (826709-B21). It operates in UEFI mode only, is off by default and must be enabled, and supports Windows only. For Linux, HPE offers an in-distro solution for a two-disk RAID 1 boot volume.

What boot and optical options does the DL380 Gen10 have?

HPE lists the NS204i-p NVMe PCIe3 OS Boot Device (P12965-B21), which comes with two 480GB M.2 NVMe drives in hardware RAID 1 for OS boot. A 9.5mm SATA DVD-ROM or DVD-RW is an option on the 8LFF model and, with the Universal Media Bay Kit (826708-B21), on SFF models; there is no support in 12LFF or 24SFF models. The HPE Mobile USB DVD-RW works on USB 3.0 ports only.
