HPE MSA Storage Parts

HPE MSA Storage Parts

The HPE MSA is HPE’s shared storage (SAN) array, and every MSA model has its own parts list. Pick your array below: each model has a Parts page with every option HPE lists for it in its QuickSpecs, and a Drives page with its hard disk drives and solid state drives, from the MSA 2040 / 2042 to the MSA Gen7 2070 / 2072. Every part on those pages is genuine HPE and ships tested or factory sealed.

What Defines an MSA Array

  • A 2U chassis, SFF or LFF: HPE describes the MSA Gen7 base array as “12 drive bay LFF or 24 drive bay SFF 2U base arrays, depending on model”. The bay form factor decides the drive: 2.5in drives in an SFF chassis, 3.5in drives in an LFF one.
  • Two controllers: on the MSA Gen7 a “Dual controller active/active (dual pool) design”; HPE notes that “The MSA Gen7 arrays do not support single controller configurations.”
  • Host ports by model: on the MSA Gen7, “16 Gb and 32 Gb Fibre Channel, 10/25 GbE iSCSI, 10GBase-T and 12 Gb SAS protocol support (depending on array model)”. Whether the transceivers come with the array depends on the model: the MSA 1050 Fibre Channel and iSCSI models ship with theirs (“4 8Gb SW FC SFPs installed”, HPE notes on the MSA 1050), while the other models’ standard Fibre Channel arrays ship without them (HPE’s Smart Choice bundles include a 4-pack). Each model’s Parts page lists the ones HPE names for it.
  • Drives belong to a generation: HPE’s MSA 2060 QuickSpecs states that “MSA Gen 6 HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with prior generation MSA Storage Systems” and that “Prior Generation of MSA HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 Storage Systems”; the MSA Gen7 uses “MSA Gen6/Gen7 drive carriers”. Each Drives page lists exactly the drives HPE names for that model.
  • Expansion through drive enclosures: “0-9 enclosures” on the MSA Gen7, over a 12 Gb SAS expansion interface, and “LFF and/or SFF drive enclosures can be mixed”. Each Parts page lists the enclosures and SAS cables HPE names for that model.
  • Hot-plug service: “All MSA Gen7 Storage Array models support hot plug replacement of controllers, drives, fans, power supplies, and I/O modules”.
  • What the number means: HPE lists the MSA generations by model as “MSA 1040/2040/2042, MSA 1050/2050/2052, and MSA 1060/2060/2062”, then the Gen7 MSA 2070 and MSA 2072. The tens digit moves with the generation (2040, 2050, 2060, 2070), and HPE lists each pair together (2040/2042, 2050/2052, 2060/2062; on the Gen7, the MSA 2070 and the MSA 2072, which HPE calls a Hybrid-Flash bundle). Order from the page for the model on your array.

Get the full model number off the array before you order. The drives and options change with the generation: HPE states that the MSA Gen7 drive options “are compatible with MSA Gen 6 and Gen7 Storage Systems only” and that media “available prior to MSA Gen6 are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 or Gen7 Storage Systems” — so an older MSA’s drive is an MSA 2070 drive only if it is on the MSA 2070 / 2072 Drives page, and each model has its own Parts and Drives pages below.

HPE MSA Storage Parts FAQ

What is an HPE MSA array?
HPE's shared storage (SAN) array. For the MSA Gen7, HPE's QuickSpecs lists a 2U, SFF or LFF chassis with two controllers per array, host connectivity of 16 Gb and 32 Gb Fibre Channel, 10/25 GbE and 10GBase-T iSCSI or 12 Gb SAS depending on the array model, and 0-9 drive enclosures over a 12 Gb SAS expansion interface. Each MSA generation has its own drive list, which is why the pages above are per model.

How do I tell which MSA model I have?
From the model number on the array and on its invoice. Note the full number - 2040, 2050, 2060 or 2070, and whether it is a 2042, 2052, 2062 or 2072 bundle, or a 1050 or 1060 - because the drives and options change with the generation, and each model has its own Parts and Drives pages above. HPE groups the generations by model as MSA 1040/2040/2042, MSA 1050/2050/2052, MSA 1060/2060/2062 and then the Gen7 MSA 2070 and 2072.

Do MSA drives carry over between generations?
Only where HPE says so. HPE's MSA 2060 QuickSpecs states that "MSA Gen 6 HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with prior generation MSA Storage Systems" and that "Prior Generation of MSA HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 Storage Systems"; the MSA Gen7 QuickSpecs says its HDD and SSD options "are compatible with MSA Gen 6 and Gen7 Storage Systems only". Order from the Drives page for your exact model.

Does an MSA array come with its SFP transceivers?
It depends on the model. The MSA 1050 Fibre Channel and iSCSI base models ship with four installed (HPE: "4 8Gb SW FC SFPs installed" on the Fibre Channel models). The others do not, as standard: HPE states that "MSA Gen7 Storage Systems do not ship with SFPs (does not apply to MSA Smart Choice models)", that "MSA 2060 Storage Systems do not ship with SFPs", that "MSA 1060 Fibre Channel Storage systems do not ship with SFPs", that "MSA 2050 SAN Controllers do not ship with any SFPs" and that "MSA 2040 SAN Controllers or pre-configured systems do not ship with any SFPs". Each model's Parts page lists the transceivers HPE names for it.

Can I add more drive bays to an MSA?
Yes, with drive enclosures. On the MSA Gen7 HPE allows "up to 9 additional drive enclosures" on any array model, LFF and SFF mixed, each shipping with a rack-mount kit and two 0.5m Mini-SAS HD cables. Each model's Parts page lists the drive enclosures and the SAS cables HPE names for that array.

Which MSA models have parts pages here?
Six: the MSA 2070 / 2072, MSA 2060 / 2062, MSA 1060, MSA 2050 / 2052, MSA 1050 and MSA 2040 / 2042. Each has a Parts page with the options HPE lists for it in its QuickSpecs and a Drives page with its hard disk drives and solid state drives, linked above.
