HPE ProLiant SL335s G7 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant SL335s G7, new and refurbished. The tray carries 12 DIMM slots — two channels per processor, three slots on each channel — and two rules decide every order here: Registered and Unbuffered cannot run together, and the third slot on a channel is not always usable.

SL335s G7 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including low-power PC3L parts
  • Slots: 12 in total — two channels per processor, four channels per server, three DIMM slots on each; with only one processor fitted, half the slots are unavailable
  • Maximum registered: 192GB, reached with twelve 16GB dual-rank PC3L-10600 modules
  • Maximum unbuffered: 32GB, reached with eight 4GB dual-rank PC3-10600 modules — only two UDIMMs go on a channel and the remaining slot has to stay empty
  • Rank limit: eight ranks per channel, which HPE states as one quad-rank DIMM and two dual-rank DIMMs at most; a quad-rank module goes one per channel, in the centre slot
  • Kits and protection: Advanced ECC across the platform, and every DDR3 option kit listed for this server is a single DIMM

Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, and neither 16GB module is what it looks like. Registered DIMMs reach 192GB across all twelve slots; Unbuffered stop at 32GB and fill only eight, because just two go on a channel. And a 16GB quad-rank kit is limited to one per channel — four slots, 64GB, 1066MHz — where the 16GB dual-rank PC3L part fills all twelve.

How Far Does Each DIMM Type Take You?

ModuleSlots that can be filledMaximum capacitySpeed at 3 DIMMs per channel
16GB dual-rank PC3L-10600 RDIMM12192GB800 or 1066MHz
8GB dual-rank PC3-10600 RDIMM1296GB1066MHz
16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 RDIMM464GBone per channel only, at 1066MHz
4GB dual-rank PC3-10600 UDIMM832GBtwo per channel only

The two 16GB modules are the trap on this platform. They share a nameplate capacity, but the quad-rank PC3-8500 part goes one to a channel and caps the tray at 64GB, while the dual-rank PC3L-10600 part fills all twelve slots and is the only route to 192GB. Below that, 8GB dual-rank RDIMMs at 96GB are the sensible middle, and Unbuffered only suits a tray that already runs it.

Choosing the Right SL335s G7 Memory

  • Check which type is fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, so converting a tray means replacing every module in it, not adding to what is there.
  • Do not buy quad-rank for capacity. A 16GB quad-rank kit looks like the big module and behaves like the small one: four usable slots, 64GB, and 1066MHz.
  • Mixing voltages throws away the low-voltage saving. If 1.35V and 1.5V modules share a tray, everything runs at 1.5V, because every low-voltage part supports it.
  • Mixing speeds drops the whole bus. The memory bus falls to the slowest DIMM in the system, even when that module sits on the other processor.
  • Balance capacity across processors. Load the channels alike where you can, and never install a DIMM for a processor that is not fitted.

SL335s G7 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in an SL335s G7?
192GB, using twelve 16GB dual-rank PC3L-10600 Registered DIMMs in a two-processor tray. Unbuffered memory tops out at 32GB, and a single-processor tray reaches half of whatever the full figure would be.

Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in an SL335s G7?
No. HPE states that the two types must not be mixed. Whichever is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match, and changing type means replacing every module in the tray.

How many memory slots does the SL335s G7 have?
Twelve, arranged as two channels per processor with three slots on each channel. With only one processor installed, only six are available.

Why can I only fit four 16GB DIMMs?
Because they are quad-rank. HPE allows a maximum of eight ranks per channel, and only one quad-rank DIMM per channel, in the centre slot. The 16GB dual-rank PC3L-10600 kit does not have that limit and fills all twelve slots.

Why did my memory drop to 1066MHz?
Either the channels are full or a slower module is present. Dual-rank RDIMMs run at 1333MHz at one or two DIMMs per channel and fall back with a third, and mixing speeds pulls the whole bus down to the slowest DIMM in the system.

Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit listed for this server is a single DIMM, so filling all twelve slots means twelve kits.
