The honest summary is that LFF is a drive and SFF is a project. Four large-format drives drop straight into the tray and run on the embedded controller up to 2TB each, while every SFF path adds enablement hardware first. The 3TB SATA drive that reaches the 12.0TB ceiling is doubly awkward: it is listed for quotation rather than priced, and the B110i will not drive it.
Choosing the Right SL335s G7 Hard Drive
- Count the bays before the terabytes. Four LFF and eight SFF are different front ends, and no carrier makes a 3.5-inch drive sit in a 2.5-inch position.
- The controller sets the ceiling as often as the drive does. The embedded B110i is SATA only at 3.0Gb/s and stops at 2.2TB per drive, so SAS or bigger means a card.
- Budget the enablement kits with the drives, not after them. An SFF build needs one s6500 SFF kit per two drives, and going past four needs more hardware again.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that drive, controller, firmware and backplane should run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest.
- SAS for duty cycle, midline SATA for bulk. The 15K LFF SAS enterprise drives carry the spindle speed; the 7.2K SATA drives carry the capacity.

Are SL335s G7 drives hot-swappable?
No. Every drive position is non-hot-plug, so a drive change takes that node down. The tray itself pulls out of the chassis while the other nodes keep running.
