HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen9 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen9, new and refurbished. The tower takes up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 processors on the Intel C610 chipset, and HPE does not support mixing different processor models — so a second CPU has to match the first exactly.

- E5-2600 v3 kits stocked: the 18-core E5-2699 v3 and 14-core E5-2697 v3, through the 12-core E5-2690 v3 and 10-core E5-2650 v3, down to the 3.5GHz four-core E5-2637 v3, plus the 55W E5-2630L v3
- Cache: up to 55MB of level 3 cache on the E5-2699 v4, 45MB on 18-core parts and down to 10MB on quad-core
- Interconnect: 9.6GT/s QPI on performance parts, 8.0GT/s on mainstream parts and 6.4GT/s on the E5-2609 and E5-2603 entry parts

A second processor does far more than add cores. With one CPU installed, only 12 of the 24 DIMM slots are available and only four of the nine expansion slots work — slots 5 to 9 belong to the second processor. It must be the same model as the first, because HPE does not support mixing processor models in one server.

The processor, not the module, sets the memory clock here, and the spread is wide: an E5-2609 v3 holds DDR4 to 1600MT/s whatever is in the slots, while an E5-2699 v4 allows 2400MT/s. Wattage is the other axis a tower buyer feels — two 145W parts ask more of the fans and the supply than two 55W E5-2630L kits, and in a floor-standing machine that difference is audible.
Choosing the Right ML350 Gen9 Processor
- Both sockets must carry the same model. Mixing processor models is not supported, so moving to two CPUs means two identical kits unless the first is being replaced as well.
- A second processor opens more than cores. It brings the other 12 DIMM slots into use and activates expansion slots 5 to 9, which is often the real reason to fit one.
- Match the memory you already own. Dropping an entry part into a server full of DDR4-2400 kits throws away the speed those modules were bought for.
- Swapping v3 for v4 does not unlock everything v4 offers. HPE supports NVDIMMs only on servers factory-configured with E5-2600 v4 processors, not on machines upgraded from v3.
- Check the power and cooling budget. Two 145W processors with several drive cages is a different proposition from two 55W parts, for the supply and the fans alike.

Can I mix different processors in an ML350 Gen9?

Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. It makes the other 12 DIMM slots usable and brings expansion slots 5 to 9 online. With one processor installed, half the memory capacity and five of the nine slots are unavailable.
