HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 Processors

Genuine HPE-qualified Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processor kits for the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9, new and refurbished. Both families run on the Intel C610 chipset, but they are not interchangeable: HPE states mixing v3 and v4 processors is not supported, while a field upgrade from v3 to v4 is.

DL380 Gen9 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: two, on the Intel C610 chipset; mixing different processor models is not supported
  • E5-2600 v3: the 6-core E5-2603 v3 to the 18-core E5-2699 v3 — 10MB to 45MB L3, 55W to 160W
  • E5-2600 v4: the 4-core E5-2623 v4 to the 22-core E5-2699 v4 — 10MB to 55MB L3, 55W to 160W
  • Memory speed: v3 parts rate memory at 1600, 1866 or 2133 MT/s; v4 parts a tier higher, to 2400 MT/s
  • Heatsinks: parts to 120W ship with the standard heatsink, parts above 120W with the High Performance heatsink, the E5-2690 v4 excepted
  • Hyper-Threading: on every listed model except the E5-2609 and E5-2603 parts in both families

-B21 is the kit you can buy; -L21 is not. HPE ships the xxxxxx-L21 as the first processor in a factory-integrated build and the xxxxxx-B21 as the second processor option kit, with two additional fans. Only the -B21 is sold as a field upgrade. Mixing processor models is not supported, and E5-2600 v3 and v4 parts will not run together in one server.

Which processors does the DL380 Gen9 support?

The generation split is the thing to get right: the families look nearly identical in a part number and will not run together. A v4 part adds cores at the top and lifts rated memory speed a full tier, so an E5-2620 v4 runs DIMMs at 2133 MT/s where an E5-2620 v3 runs them at 1866.

Choosing the Right DL380 Gen9 Processor

  • Know the SKU suffix. The -B21 kit is the orderable option kit sold as a field upgrade; the -L21 is factory integration only, the first processor in a configure-to-order build, and never a field part.
  • Both sockets take the same part. Mixing processor models is not supported, so an upgrade is a matched pair, not a spare CPU in the empty socket.
  • The second processor unlocks the box. It brings the other 12 DIMM slots into use, is required for the optional secondary riser, and its kit adds two fans.
  • Read the memory column. 2400 MT/s needs an E5-2643 v4 or above; E5-2603 v4 and E5-2609 v4 cap at 1866 MT/s.
  • Watch TDP. The 160W E5-2687W parts top the range, and double-wide PCIe cards need a processor carrying the High Performance heatsink.

DL380 Gen9 Processors FAQ

What processors does the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 series processors on the Intel C610 chipset, in up to two sockets. The v3 list runs from the 6-core E5-2603 v3 to the 18-core E5-2699 v3; the v4 list runs from the 4-core E5-2623 v4 to the 22-core E5-2699 v4 and E5-2699A v4.

Can I mix E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors in a DL380 Gen9?
No. HPE states that mixing E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processors is not supported, and that mixing different processor models is not supported at all. Both sockets must carry the same part number.

Can I upgrade a DL380 Gen9 from v3 to v4 processors?
Yes. HPE states that a field upgrade from E5-2600 v3 to E5-2600 v4 is supported. Plan it as a matched pair, since both sockets must end up on the same model, and expect a firmware level that supports the v4 family.

What do the -B21 and -L21 suffixes mean on a DL380 Gen9 processor kit?
The -B21 kit is the orderable option kit, and it is what you buy as a field upgrade or second processor; HPE notes it ships with two additional fans. The -L21 kit is factory integration only - the first processor in a configure-to-order server - and is not sold as a field upgrade.

What is the maximum core count of the DL380 Gen9?
HPE's Upgradeability line reads 'Upgradeable to 2 processors (36 Cores)', which matches two 18-core E5-2699 v3 parts. The processor table in the same document goes further, listing the E5-2699 v4 at 22 cores.

Does the second processor change what a DL380 Gen9 can do?
Yes, in three ways. It brings the other 12 DIMM slots into use, it is required before the optional three-slot secondary riser can be populated, and its option kit contains two additional fans, taking a one-processor server from four fans to six.
