Choosing the Right DL320 Gen12 Drives

  • Never mix interfaces, endurance classes, or drive types in one array — build each from identical drives.
  • SATA needs the right controller. The backplane notes state SATA SFF drives are supported only with an appropriate controller, and Intel VROC does not support SATA.
  • LFF capacity is stated two ways. The maximum storage table lists LFF HDD capacity at 24TB. The orderable drive list runs to 26TB in both SAS and SATA.
  • Boot from the NS204i-u v2 rather than spending front bays on the OS — dual M.2 in hardware RAID1, and it occupies no PCIe slot.
  • Plan cooling with the flash: high-performance fan kits are required with high-performance NVMe drives or certain backplanes.

How many drives fit in a DL320 Gen12?
It depends on the chassis. The SFF server holds 8 SFF drives, or 10 with the 8+2 cage. The SFF/EDSFF server holds up to 10 SFF or 20 EDSFF E3.S. The 4LFF and 12LFF servers hold 4 and 12 LFF spindles; the GPU server holds 4 SFF or 8 EDSFF.

Does the HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen12 support 3.5-inch LFF drives?
Yes, in the 4LFF and 12LFF CTO chassis, on the LFF Low Profile Carrier. Note that the document states LFF capacity two ways: the maximum storage table lists 24TB LFF HDDs, while the orderable drive list runs to 26TB in SAS and SATA.

What is EDSFF E3.S and why does this server use it?
E3.S is the EDSFF ruler-style NVMe form factor. On the DL320 Gen12 it is what makes 20 flash bays possible in 1U, and the E3.S drives listed are NVMe Gen5 parts in the EC1 size.

What is the difference between Read Intensive and Mixed Use SSDs?
Endurance. Read Intensive drives suit read-heavy serving and cost less per TB; Mixed Use drives suit write-heavy databases and virtualization. The DL320 Gen12 list also includes a Very Read Optimized class in E3.S NVMe. Never mix classes in one array.

Can the DL320 Gen12 run NVMe drives without a RAID controller?
Yes. Intel VROC provides CPU-based RAID for direct-attached NVMe, up to 8 direct attach NVMe bays with RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 depending on licensing. It is disabled by default and does not support SATA drives.

Are HPE Multi Vendor SSDs genuine HPE drives?
Yes. Multi Vendor (MV) SSDs are HPE-qualified drives running HPE firmware, sourced from more than one flash manufacturer. They carry HPE part numbers and appear throughout the DL320 Gen12 listings.
