HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 Drives

The HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 takes 2.5-inch SFF BC drives in the 8SFF model and the GPU model's 4SFF cage, 3.5-inch LFF LP drives in the 4LFF and 12LFF models, and E3.S NVMe drives in the GPU model's 8EDSFF cage. Behind a tri-mode controller the SFF bays take SAS, SATA or U.3 NVMe drives. Wired straight to the system board, the 8SFF x1 cage takes SATA drives only and the 8SFF x4 cage NVMe U.3 drives only. The LFF bays take SAS or SATA drives, and SATA only with no controller.

Which drives fit the DL320 Gen11

The bay decides the drive's size and carrier; the cage's connection decides which interfaces work. HPE's maximum counts:

SFF, LFF or E3.S? How to tell

Count the drive bays. Eight 2.5-inch bays (two more can sit in the Universal Media Bay) is the 8SFF model. Four 3.5-inch bays is the 4LFF model, twelve the 12LFF model. Four 2.5-inch bays or an E3.S cage is the GPU model.
Match the SKU number to the product numbers shown here: P52766-B21 is the 8SFF, P52765-B21 the 4LFF, P52767-B21 the 12LFF and P61218-B21 the GPU configure-to-order server.
Check the 8SFF cage and the controller. The 8SFF cage is an x1 or an x4 U.3 cage. With a tri-mode controller it takes SAS, SATA and NVMe; with none, the x1 cage takes SATA only and the x4 cage NVMe U.3 only.

Three rules before you order

Match the carrier, not only the size

Every SFF drive HPE lists for the DL320 Gen11 is SFF BC, and every SFF cage it lists is a BC cage. LFF bays take LFF LP hard drives, and HPE lists the LFF SSDs as LFF LPC. The 8EDSFF cage takes E3.S EC1 drives.

The cage's connection sets the interface

On a tri-mode controller the U.3 cages take SAS, SATA and U.3 NVMe. With no controller, the 8SFF x1 cage takes SATA only, the 8SFF x4 cage NVMe U.3 only, and the 2SFF cage two NVMe U.3 drives or SATA drives (SATA only beside an 8SFF x4 cage, unless the NVMe adapter P25527-B21 is fitted). The LFF models take SATA only with no controller; the 4LFF model takes no PCIe controller and the 12LFF model no OROC controller.

Check the fans

HPE generally requires the High-Performance Fan Kit (P48908-B21) with processors over 185W, High-Performance NVMe drives or certain backplanes. It lists the kit as required for the 24G SAS SSDs, the Mixed Use NVMe SFF SSDs and the NS204i-u.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11?

2.5-inch SFF BC drives in SAS, SATA or U.3 NVMe in the 8SFF model and the GPU model's 4SFF cage; 3.5-inch LFF LP drives in SAS or SATA in the 4LFF and 12LFF models; and E3.S EC1 NVMe drives in the GPU model's 8EDSFF cage. Two M.2 SSDs also fit on the board.

Does the DL320 Gen11 support NVMe drives?

Yes. U.3 NVMe SSDs fit the SFF bays behind a tri-mode controller. With no controller, the 8SFF x4 cage takes NVMe U.3 only; the GPU model's 4SFF cage takes up to 4 NVMe U.3 drives with the GPU 4x Direct Connected NVMe FIO Enablement Kit (P62181-B21); and the 2SFF cage takes 2 NVMe U.3 or SATA drives, but SATA only beside an 8SFF x4 cage unless the NVMe adapter (P25527-B21) is fitted. The GPU model's 8EDSFF cage takes E3.S NVMe SSDs. HPE lists the LFF bays as SAS/SATA only.

How many drives does the DL320 Gen11 hold?

Up to 10 SFF drives in the 8SFF model (8 front, 2 in the Universal Media Bay), 12 LFF drives in the 12LFF model or 4 in the 4LFF model, by HPE's count. The GPU model takes 4 SFF drives, or E3.S drives in the 8EDSFF cage, 4 at most when direct attached.

Can I run SATA drives without a RAID controller?

Yes. Embedded Intel VROC SATA offers RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. It runs in UEFI mode only and is off until enabled. Direct attached, the 8SFF x1 cage takes 8 SATA drives in two RAID groups of four bays, the 4LFF model 4 and the 12LFF model 10.

Can I add M.2 SSDs to the DL320 Gen11?

Yes. Two M.2 connectors on the board take two SATA or two NVMe M.2 SSDs, not a mix. M.2 NVMe drives run at PCIe Gen3 speed at most, and HPE requires seven fans when M.2 SSDs are fitted.

What boot and optical options does the DL320 Gen11 have?

The HPE NS204i-u (P48183-B21) holds two 480GB M.2 NVMe SSDs with hardware RAID 1 preconfigured. It needs its cable kit (P52786-B21) and the High-Performance Fan Kit. A 9.5mm SATA DVD-ROM or DVD-RW fits the 8SFF and 4LFF models, not the 12LFF or GPU models.
