HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Drives
The HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 takes LFF hot-plug drives in the main storage section of the chassis: 60 bays in the 1x60 model, 50 in the 2x25 model and 45 in the 3x15 model. HP says they can be populated with any combination of SAS, SATA or SATA SSD drives, run by the HP SL4500 H220 Host Bus Adapter or an HP Smart Array P420i in the I/O Module. Each server node also has two SFF bays, controlled only by the HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i SATA RAID.

Which drives fit the SL4540 Gen8
The model sets the LFF bay count; the I/O Module controller runs the LFF bays and the B120i runs the node's SFF bays. HP's maximum counts:

1x60, 2x25 or 3x15? How to tell
- Count the server nodes. One node is the 1x60 model with 60 LFF bays. Two nodes is the 2x25 model, 25 LFF bays per node. Three nodes is the 3x15 model, 15 per node.
- Match the product number. The CTO chassis are 663600-B21 (1x60), 663600-B22 (2x25) and 663600-B23 (3x15). Pre-configured 748409-001 has 3 nodes in 1 chassis, with one H220 HBA per node.
- Check the LFF controller in the I/O Module at the rear: the HP SL4500 H220 HBA (one per node) or the Smart Array P420i (up to two per node). The node's own two SFF drives run on the B120i SATA RAID.

Three rules before you order
Match the bay: LFF or node SFF
The main storage section takes LFF hot-plug drives; HP lists them with SC in the name, and its 12G SAS LFF SSDs as SCC. Each server node has two SFF bays on its front, which take SFF SC drives.
The controller sets the interface
The LFF bays run on the HP SL4500 H220 Host Bus Adapter (only one per node) or the Smart Array P420i (up to two per node), both in the I/O Module. The B120i SATA RAID controls only the node's two SFF drives. Each P420i needs a cache module and the 12 inch Supercap kit; zero memory cache is not supported.
Mix and speed in the LFF bays
HP says the LFF bays can be populated with any combination of SAS, SATA or SATA SSD drives. 12G SAS SSDs operate at 6G when deployed in the SL4540 Gen8.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8?
LFF hot-plug SAS, SATA and SATA SSD drives in any combination in the main storage section, and two SFF SATA drives on each server node for OS, boot or additional storage. HP also lists PCIe Workload Accelerators and PCIe ioDrive2 cards.
How many drives does the SL4540 Gen8 hold?
The 1x60 model holds 60 LFF drives and 2 SFF drives. The 2x25 model holds up to 25 LFF and 2 SFF drives per node, and the 3x15 model up to 15 LFF and 2 SFF drives per node.
Does the SL4540 Gen8 support SSDs?
Yes. HP lists 6G SATA LFF SSDs on SC carriers, 12G SAS LFF SSDs on SCC carriers, which operate at 6G in the SL4540 Gen8, SFF SATA SSDs for the node bays, and PCIe Workload Accelerators.
Which controller runs the LFF drives?
The HP SL4500 H220 Host Bus Adapter (only one per node) or the Smart Array P420i (up to two per node), both in the I/O Module. Each P420i needs a cache module and the 12 inch Supercap kit, and with two P420i the SL454x Storage Mezzanine to PCIe Enablement Kit cannot be ordered.
