HPE ProLiant SL170s G6 Memory
The SL170s G6 has 16 DIMM slots, 8 per processor on three channels (3 + 3 + 2 slots), and takes HPE DDR3 memory as registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs), never both in one server. Registered memory is the way to the maximum: HPE rates it at up to 256GB (16 x 16GB) with RDIMMs and 48GB (12 x 4GB) with UDIMMs.

How population and speed fit together
Each processor has 3 memory channels: two with 3 slots and one with 2. Kits are rated DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1066; the processor model and how many DIMMs share a channel set the speed you actually get.

HPE: a channel with three DIMMs runs the whole server at 800 MHz; UDIMMs and quad-rank RDIMMs are limited to two per channel (12 slots), with no more than 8 ranks per channel. Processors tagged DDR3-1066 (E5620, E5630, E5640, L5630, E5606, E5603) and DDR3-800 (E5506, E5503) cap the speed. The QuickSpecs give no count table; the picker uses 1, 2, 3, 6 or 8 DIMMs per processor.
Three rules that avoid a return
1 Registered or unbuffered, never both
HPE: do not mix unbuffered memory (UDIMMs) with registered memory (RDIMMs). If memory is already installed, match the type (and ideally the part number) on the existing DIMM label.
2 Low-voltage kits need Xeon 5600 processors
Kits marked PC3L are low-voltage DIMMs and can only be used with Intel Xeon 5600 series processors. If voltages are mixed the server runs everything at 1.5V.
3 Fill channels for bandwidth
Three matching DIMMs per processor fill every channel once. Populate the white slots first, heaviest DIMMs (most ranks) farthest from the processor, and balance both processors.
SL170s G6 memory questions
How much memory does the HP ProLiant SL170s G6 support?
Up to 256GB per server tray with registered DIMMs (16 x 16GB), or 48GB with unbuffered DIMMs (12 x 4GB). With one processor only its 8 slots are usable.
What type of memory does the SL170s G6 use?
HPE DDR3 memory: registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) from 2GB to 16GB rated DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600) or DDR3-1066 (PC3-8500), and unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs) from 1GB to 4GB at DDR3-1333. Every kit contains one DIMM.
What speed will the memory run at?
1333 MT/s with one DIMM per channel on a DDR3-1333 processor (PC3-8500 kits 1066); with two per channel 1333 through an RBSU setting (16GB low-voltage kits 1066, the quad-rank kit 800); with three in any channel the server runs at 800 MT/s. Processors rated DDR3-1066 or DDR3-800 cap the speed at their rating.
Can I mix registered and unbuffered DIMMs?
No. HPE states that unbuffered and registered memory must not be mixed. Choose one type and use it in every slot.
