HPE ProLiant DL585 G7 Processors
Genuine HPE AMD Opteron processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL585 G7, new and refurbished. This is a four-socket server populated two sockets at a time — every option kit contains two processors, and HPE does not support three-processor configurations, so the only valid counts are two and four.
DL585 G7 Processor Specifications
- Sockets: four, on the AMD SR5690/SP5100 chipset, shipped with two or four processors depending on the model and upgradeable to four; three-processor configurations are not supported
- Kit contents: every Opteron option kit for this server contains two processors, complete with heatsink and fans
- Twelve-core kits stocked: Opteron 6176SE at 2.3GHz and 105W ACP, 6174 at 2.2GHz, 6172 at 2.1GHz and 6168 at 1.9GHz all at 80W ACP, and the 6164HE at 1.7GHz and 65W ACP, each with 12MB of cache
- Eight-core kit stocked: Opteron 6136 at 2.4GHz with 12MB of cache, rated 115W TDP
- Platform range: HPE documents Opteron parts for this server in four, eight, twelve and sixteen core forms, with 16MB of level 3 cache on the 6200 and 6300 series generation
- Memory tie: Load Reduced DIMMs and 1600MHz memory are supported only alongside Opteron 6200 or 6300 series processors
Two or four, never three, and never one at a time. Every AMD Opteron option kit for this server contains two processors, and HPE does not support three-processor configurations. Going from two sockets to four also needs the DL585 G7 CPU Memory Secondary Upgrade Option, which physically adds sockets 3 and 4 and their DIMM slots.
Two Processors or Four?
| Two-processor model | Four-processor model | |
|---|---|---|
| Option kits | One two-processor kit | Two two-processor kits |
| DIMM slots live | 24 | 48 |
| Power supplies standard | Two 1200W | Four 1200W |
| Extra hardware to get there | None | The DL585 G7 CPU Memory Secondary Upgrade Option |
Going from two processors to four is not a drop-in purchase on this platform. Sockets 3 and 4 and the DIMM slots that belong to them arrive on a separate CPU and memory upgrade option, which four-processor models already have configured — so the upgrade is that kit, a second pair of matched processors, the memory to fill the new banks, and two more power supplies. It is worth knowing before the second pair of Opterons is ordered on its own.
Choosing the Right DL585 G7 Processor
- Processors come in pairs. Option kits contain two, and three-processor configurations are not supported, so an upgrade step is two sockets wide.
- Every kit includes cooling. HPE ships these option kits complete with heatsink and fans, so no separate thermal kit is needed.
- ACP and TDP are different measurements. The kits stocked here quote Average CPU Power for most parts and Thermal Design Power for the 6136, so comparing the numbers directly overstates the difference.
- Low-voltage and 1600MHz memory need the later Opterons. Load Reduced DIMMs and 1600MHz parts are documented only for 6200 and 6300 series processors, so a machine on 6100 series parts is fixed to 1333MHz registered memory and below.
- Check the power feed as well as the sockets. Each 1200W supply is rated for 910W on low line, and a four-socket build with a full memory bank spends that quickly.

DL585 G7 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the DL585 G7 support?
AMD Opteron 6000 series parts, in four, eight, twelve and sixteen core forms, with two or four installed. The kits listed for this server are twelve-core 6164HE, 6168, 6172, 6174 and 6176SE, and the eight-core 6136.
Can a DL585 G7 run three processors?
No. HPE explicitly does not support three-processor configurations on this server. The supported counts are two and four, which is also why the option kits contain two processors each.
How many processors are in a DL585 G7 option kit?
Two. Every AMD Opteron option kit listed for this server is a two-processor kit, and each comes complete with heatsink and fans.
What do I need to upgrade a DL585 G7 from two processors to four?
The DL585 G7 CPU Memory Secondary Upgrade Option, which adds processor sockets 3 and 4 and their associated DIMM slots, plus a second two-processor kit. Four-processor models already have that upgrade configured, and ship four power supplies rather than two.
Does adding processors add memory capacity?
Yes, and substantially. DIMM banks are active only when the corresponding processor socket is populated, so a two-processor server has 24 usable slots and a four-processor server has all 48.
What is the difference between ACP and TDP ratings?
They are two different ways of stating processor power. AMD publishes Average CPU Power alongside Thermal Design Power, and the kits listed for this server quote ACP for most parts and TDP for the 6136.
