Every processor kit for this blade holds two processors. The BL685c G7 is supported with two or four processors and nothing in between, so a full blade is two kits — HPE's own route to four pairs one xxxxxx-L21 kit with one xxxxxx-B21 kit. One kit of twelve-core 6174s is 24 cores; two kits fill the blade at 48. The HE parts give up a few hundred megahertz for 15 watts per processor, which counts for more in a blade than in a rack server, because the enclosure's power and cooling are shared with every other bay in it. Watch the measure as well as the number: these kit names quote ACP, while the QuickSpecs quotes TDP for the Opteron 6300 series, and the two figures are not comparable.

Choosing the Right BL685c G7 Processor

  • Buy in kits of two, and in pairs for a full blade. Going from two processors to four means a second kit, and HPE's own four-processor route pairs an xxxxxx-L21 kit with an xxxxxx-B21 kit.
  • The second pair unlocks the other sixteen DIMM slots. With two processors fitted, half the blade's 32 memory slots are unavailable, which is often the real reason to fill the remaining sockets.
  • Do not plan a single-processor blade. HPE supports two-processor and four-processor configurations on this model and nothing else.
  • Every processor installed needs at least one DIMM. Adding a pair of processors without memory behind them leaves the new sockets with nothing to run.
  • Processor generation decides what memory will run. Load Reduced DIMMs are supported on Opteron 6200 and 6300 series parts only, so a blade built on the kits above is a Registered-DIMM machine.
