Two bays, one drive type. HPE does not support mixing SAS, SATA and SSD drives within the same blade, so the drive already fitted decides what the second one has to be. Both bays filled gives 2.4TB on SAS, 2.0TB on SATA or 1.6TB on solid state — halve that if the pair is mirrored.

With two bays the array is a mirrored pair or a stripe, and that decides the shape of the whole build: a mirror halves the usable capacity in the table above, a stripe keeps it and gives up the redundancy. Anything larger belongs outside the blade, on a Smart Array mezzanine controller or a Fibre Channel mezzanine card, which is why so many of these blades run a small mirrored pair for the operating system and nothing else.

Choosing the Right BL620c G7 Hard Drive

  • Match the type already fitted. SAS, SATA and SSD cannot be mixed in one blade, so a second drive has to follow the first rather than the price list.
  • Order two if you want RAID. Both RAID 0 and RAID 1 require two drives installed, and a single drive leaves the P410i with nothing to protect.
  • The bays are 2.5-inch hot-plug only. Drives arrive in HPE hot-plug carriers sized for the bay; there is no large form factor option on this chassis at any point in its life.
  • Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that drive, controller, firmware and backplane should run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest part of the path — and this path is 6G SAS and 3G SATA.
  • Enterprise for transactions, midline for bulk. The 10K and 15K enterprise SAS drives carry the duty cycle; the 7.2K midline drives carry the capacity per pound across the same two bays.
