HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 Processors

Genuine HPE processor kits for the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors on the Intel C741 chipset, and two rules shape every order: HPE does not support mixing two different processor models, and a field upgrade from a 4th Generation part to a 5th is not supported either.

ML350 Gen11 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: two, on the Intel C741 chipset; the second makes the other sixteen DIMM slots and the upper risers usable
  • 4th Generation range: Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze, to 60 cores and 112.5MB of L3 cache at 350W
  • 5th Generation range: to 64 cores and 320MB of cache at 350W, paired with DDR5-5600 memory rather than DDR5-4800
  • Memory speed by part: most run DDR5 at 4800 MT/s; the Gold 6430, 6421N, 5420+, 5418Y, 5411N, 5416S and 5415+ cap at 4400 MT/s
  • Single-socket-only parts: the U-suffix parts — 6414U, 3408U, 3508U — plus the 6421N, 5411N, 8581V and 8558U
  • Kit contents: every SKU ships with the processor alone, so a Standard or Performance Heat Sink Kit is a separate line

A processor kit is the processor and nothing else. Every SKU ships without a heat sink, so a Standard Heat Sink Kit goes with anything below 195W and a Performance Heat Sink Kit with 195W and above. At 300W and above the Redundant Fan Kit and the Second CPU Fan Kit join the list, which is three part numbers behind one apparent upgrade.

How Many Cores, and What Does the Cooling Cost?

ProcessorCoresTDPCooling required
Xeon-Platinum 8470 2.0GHz52350WPerformance heat sink, both fan kits
Xeon-Platinum 8468V 2.4GHz48330WPerformance heat sink, both fan kits
Xeon-Platinum 8452Y 2.0GHz36300WPerformance heat sink, both fan kits
Xeon-Gold 6454S 2.2GHz32270WPerformance heat sink
Xeon-Gold 6414U 2.0GHz32250WPerformance heat sink; one socket only

Cooling is part of the purchase here. Anything at 195W or above takes the Performance Heat Sink, and at 300W and above the Redundant Fan Kit and the Second CPU Fan Kit both become requirements — three part numbers behind what looks like one upgrade.

Choosing the Right ML350 Gen11 Processor

  • A second processor must match the first exactly. Mixing two different models is not supported, so going to two sockets means two of the same kit.
  • The two generations do not cross. A field upgrade from an x4xx part to an x5xx part is not supported, and they take different DDR5 speed grades.
  • Read the suffix before the core count. A U-suffix part, and the 6421N, 5411N, 8581V and 8558U, run in a single socket only.
  • Budget the heat sink and the fans. Below 195W the Standard kit, at 195W and above the Performance kit, and at 300W and above two fan kits as well.
  • A second processor opens the rest of the machine. It brings the other sixteen DIMM slots into play, and the upper risers will not carry expansion cards without it.

ML350 Gen11 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the ML350 Gen11 support?
Up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors. 4th Generation parts reach 60 cores and 112.5MB of L3 cache at 350W, and 5th Generation parts reach 64 cores and 320MB of cache.

Can I mix different processors in an ML350 Gen11?
No. HPE does not support mixing two different processor models in the same server, so both sockets have to carry the same part number.

Can I upgrade an ML350 Gen11 from 4th Generation to 5th Generation processors?
No. HPE states that a field upgrade from 4th Generation processors to 5th Generation processors is not supported, and the two generations also take different DDR5 speed grades.

Do ML350 Gen11 processor kits include a heat sink?
No. Every processor SKU ships with the processor only, and an adequate heat sink kit has to be selected with it.

Which heat sink does my ML350 Gen11 processor need?
Processors below 195W TDP take the Standard Heat Sink Kit, and processors at 195W or above take the Performance Heat Sink Kit. At 300W and above the Redundant Fan Kit and Second CPU Fan Kit are required as well.

What does the U in a processor such as the 6414U mean?
It marks a part optimised for single-socket use. The U-suffix processors, along with the 6421N, 5411N, 8581V and 8558U, are supported in one-socket configurations only.
