HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 Storage Controllers
Genuine HPE Gen11 storage controllers, cache backup modules and cable kits for the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11, new and refurbished. Gen11 storage splits into two families that cannot be mixed as internal controllers — MegaRAID (MR) tri-mode cards and SmartRAID (SR) cards use different configuration tools, and HPE does not support one of each internally.
ML350 Gen11 Storage Controller Specifications
- Tri-mode MegaRAID: MR216i and MR416i at x16 lanes for up to 16 SAS, SATA or NVMe drives; MR408i at x8 for up to 8
- SmartRAID: the SR932i-p Gen11, x32 lanes and 8GB of wide cache, addressing up to 32 drives
- Cache: 8GB on MR416i and SR932i-p, 4GB on MR408i, none on MR216i — which limits the MR216i to RAID 0, 1 and 10
- Two form factors: -p plug-in cards occupy a PCIe slot; -o OCP cards sit in Slot 14 OCP 1 and take none
- Cache backup: every cached card requires a 96W Smart Storage lithium-ion battery or a hybrid capacitor, each with a 260mm cable kit
- External storage: the Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10, eight external lanes and no cache, for up to 8 external drives
- Embedded option: Intel VROC SATA RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 on the embedded controller's two SlimSAS ports, UEFI only
Cache is what buys parity RAID on this generation. The MR216i carries no cache and is documented for RAID 0, 1 and 10 only, so an array that needs RAID 5 or 6 starts at the MR408i. Every cached card — MR408i, MR416i and SR932i-p — also requires a 96W Smart Storage battery or a hybrid capacitor to go with it.
Which ML350 Gen11 Controller Matches Your Drive Count?
| Controller | Lanes | Cache | Drives addressed |
|---|---|---|---|
| MR216i-o and MR216i-p | x16 | None | 16 SAS/SATA/NVMe, RAID 0, 1 and 10 |
| MR408i-o | x8 | 4GB | 8 SAS/SATA/NVMe |
| MR416i-o and MR416i-p | x16 | 8GB | 16 SAS/SATA/NVMe |
| SR932i-p | x32 | 8GB wide cache | 32 SAS/SATA/NVMe |
| Smart Array E208e-p | 8 external | None | 8 external SAS/SATA |
Drive count picks the card more reliably than cache size does: on a chassis reaching 24 SFF bays the sixteen-drive MR216i and MR416i stop short where the SR932i-p covers it. Note what the cacheless MR216i gives up as well — no cache means no RAID 5 or 6, so a parity array starts at the MR408i.
Choosing the Right ML350 Gen11 Storage Controller
- Settle MR or SR before the model number. Mixing the two families internally is unsupported, and they are configured with different tools.
- Budget for cache backup with any cached card. The MR408i, MR416i and SR932i-p all require a 96W battery or a hybrid capacitor, and the 260mm cable kits cannot be selected together.
- The SR932i-p needs a genuine x16 slot. On the default 4x8 primary riser every slot is electrically x8, so this card brings a 2x16 riser kit with it.
- An OCP controller saves a PCIe slot but claims Slot 14. OCP RAID is supported on Slot 14 OCP 1 only, and needs no OCP 1 enablement kit.

ML350 Gen11 Storage Controllers FAQ
Which RAID controller does the ML350 Gen11 come with?
All models carry an embedded storage controller with two SlimSAS ports, supporting Intel VROC SATA RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 across up to 12 LFF or 8 SFF bays. Anything beyond that is an MR or SR controller chosen as an option.
Can I mix MR and SR controllers in one ML350 Gen11?
Not as internal controllers. HPE does not support mixing MegaRAID and SmartRAID series internal controllers in the same server, and the two use different configuration tools.
What is the difference between the -o and -p controllers?
The -p cards are PCIe plug-in controllers and take an expansion slot. The -o cards are OCP controllers, supported on Slot 14 OCP 1 only, and they occupy no PCIe slot.
Do I need a battery with an ML350 Gen11 controller?
Yes for any cached card. The MR408i, MR416i and SR932i-p each require a 96W Smart Storage lithium-ion battery or a Smart Storage hybrid capacitor.
Does the MR216i support RAID 5?
No. The MR216i has no cache and is documented for RAID 0, 1 and 10 across up to 16 drives. A parity array needs a cached card such as the MR408i, MR416i or SR932i-p.
How many drives can one ML350 Gen11 controller address?
Sixteen on the MR216i and MR416i, eight on the MR408i, and thirty-two on the SR932i-p. Only the SR932i-p covers a fully populated 24-bay SFF chassis from a single card.
