HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8 Drives
The HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8 takes SFF hot-plug SC drives in SAS or SATA in the 8 SFF model, and LFF drives in the 4 LFF models: hot-plug SC drives, or non-hot-plug SAS and SATA hard drives in the Non-hot Plug model. HPE lists 6G SATA SSDs for the hot-plug SFF and LFF bays. The controller decides the interface: the embedded HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i on the LFF models runs SATA drives, so SAS drives need a standup HP Smart Array controller or host bus adapter, which the 8 SFF model requires.

Hot plug, non-hot plug or SFF? How to tell
- Count the drive bays. Eight SFF bays is the Hot Plug 8 SFF model. Four LFF bays is a 4 LFF model, hot plug or non-hot plug.
- Match the product number. 675242-B21 is the Hot Plug 8 SFF CTO server, 675241-B21 the Hot Plug 4 LFF and 675240-B21 the Non-hot Plug 4 LFF. The pre-configured 721546-xx1 and 674785-xx1 have the 4 LFF NHP cage.
- Check the storage controller. With only the embedded HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i, run SATA drives. A Smart Array P222 or P420, or a host bus adapter, adds SAS.

Three rules before you order
Match the bay type
The Hot Plug 8 SFF and Hot Plug 4 LFF models take hot-plug SC drives, which HPE lists under SmartDrive headings. The Non-hot Plug 4 LFF models have a 4 LFF NHP SAS/SATA cage, and HPE lists non-hot-plug LFF SAS and SATA hard drives for it.
The controller sets the interface
The embedded HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i on the LFF models runs SATA drives on 4 ports, RAID 0/1/10 only. SAS drives need a standup HP Smart Array controller or host bus adapter, and the 8 SFF model requires one.
Kits change the bay type
HPE's LFF Kit (674839-B21) is a backplane kit for going from non-hot-plug LFF to hot-plug LFF. The SFF Kit (674841-B21) is the cage plus backplane, designed to convert from any LFF configuration to SFF.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8?
SFF hot-plug SC drives in SAS or SATA in the 8 SFF model, and LFF drives in the 4 LFF models: hot-plug SC drives, or non-hot-plug SAS and SATA hard drives in the Non-hot Plug model. HPE lists 6G SATA SSDs for the hot-plug SFF and LFF bays.
Do drives from the ML310e Gen8 v2 fit the ML310e Gen8?

Does the ML310e Gen8 support SSDs?
Yes. HPE lists 6G SATA SSDs for the hot-plug SFF and LFF bays: Mainstream Endurance, Value Endurance and Value Endurance boot SSDs. HPE gives a maximum of 8 x 800GB SATA SSDs in the SFF model.
How many drives does the ML310e Gen8 hold?
Up to 8 SFF drives in the 8 SFF model, or 4 LFF drives in a 4 LFF model. HPE also lists D2600 and D2700 disk enclosures for external drives on a Smart Array P222 or P421 controller.
Can I run SATA drives without a controller card?
On the 4 LFF models, yes: the embedded HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i runs SATA drives on 4 ports, RAID 0/1/10 only, with no FBWC support. The 8 SFF model requires a standup HP Smart Array controller or host bus adapter.
What optical drives fit the ML310e Gen8?
HPE lists the HP Half-Height SATA DVD ROM and DVD RW JackBlack Optical Drives. The server has up to 2 optical drive bays; once a redundant power supply is installed, Bay A is the only media bay available.
