HPE ProLiant DL380 G7 Memory
The DL380 G7 has 18 DIMM slots, 9 per processor, and takes HPE DDR3 memory as registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs), never both in one server. Registered memory is the way to the maximum: HPE rates the DL380 G7 at up to 384GB of registered memory (twelve 32GB DIMMs, two per channel, at 800 MHz).

How population and speed fit together
Each processor has 3 memory channels with 3 slots per channel. Kits are rated DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1066; the processor model and how many DIMMs share a channel set the speed you actually get.

Quad-rank DIMMs are limited to two per channel; that is why the registered maximum uses 12 DIMMs rather than 18. HPE's QuickSpecs give population guidance only; the picker uses 1, 2, 3, 6 or 9 DIMMs per processor.
Three rules that avoid a return
1 Registered or unbuffered, never both
HPE: registered and unbuffered memory cannot be mixed in the same server. If memory is already installed, match the type (and ideally the part number) on the existing DIMM label.
2 Low-voltage kits need Xeon 5600 processors
Kits marked PC3L are low-voltage DIMMs and can only be used with Intel Xeon 5600 series processors. Standard-voltage kits work with both 5500 and 5600 series.
3 Fill channels for bandwidth
Three matching DIMMs per processor fill every channel once. Populate both processors identically, in the slot order printed on the system board.
DL380 G7 memory questions
How much memory does the HP ProLiant DL380 G7 support?
HPE rates it at up to 384GB of registered memory (twelve 32GB DIMMs, two per channel, at 800 MHz). Registered DIMMs are required to reach the maximum, and a single processor leaves half the slots unusable. For maximum performance HPE lists 192GB as six 32GB RDIMMs at 1066 MHz, one per channel.
What type of memory does the DL380 G7 use?
HPE DDR3 memory: registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) from 2GB to 32GB and unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs) from 1GB to 4GB, rated DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600) or DDR3-1066 (PC3-8500). Every kit contains one DIMM.
Can I mix registered and unbuffered DIMMs?
No. HPE states that registered and unbuffered memory cannot be mixed in the same server. Choose one type and use it in every slot.
What does PC3L mean?
Low-voltage (1.35V) DDR3. On this server PC3L kits can only be used with Intel Xeon 5600 series processors.
