HPE ProLiant DL360e Gen8 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE network adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL360e Gen8, new and refurbished. There is no FlexibleLOM on this platform — the HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 366i adapter is fixed on the system board — so every upgrade past the four onboard gigabit ports is a stand-up PCIe card competing for one of just two slots.

DL360e Gen8 Networking Specifications

  • Onboard networking: the HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 366i adapter on every model; the dedicated 1Gb iLO 4 management port is separate
  • Expansion slots: two, on a removable riser cage — slot 1 full-height/half-length (250mm) x16 PCIe 3.0, slot 2 low profile PCIe 2.0 with an x8 connector and four electrical lanes
  • 1GbE PCIe cards: NC112T, NC365T 4-port, 331T 4-port, 361T 2-port and 332T 2-port
  • 10GbE PCIe cards: NC552SFP, NC523SFP, 530SFP and 560SFP+ on SFP+, with the 530T and 561T on BASE-T
  • InfiniBand and converged: 4X QDR ConnectX-2 and QLogic 4X QDR dual-port HCAs, the FDR/Ethernet 10Gb/40Gb 544QSFP, plus CN1100E, CN1000Q and CN1100R adapters
  • Requirements: a minimum of 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter, and direct attach cables or fiber transceivers purchased separately

There is no FlexibleLOM here. The HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 366i adapter is fixed on the DL360e Gen8 system board, so every step past those four gigabit ports costs one of the server's two PCIe slots. Slot 1 is the full-height x16 PCIe 3.0 position and slot 2 is low profile with four PCIe 2.0 lanes, so plan the network card and the storage card together.

Which network adapter fits the DL360e Gen8?

Two slots is the entire expansion budget here, and a Smart Array card usually wants one. Slot 1 is the only full-height position and the only x16 PCIe 3.0 path, so it is where a dual-port 10GbE or QSFP card belongs; slot 2 takes low-profile cards on four PCIe 2.0 lanes.

Choosing the Right DL360e Gen8 Network Adapter

  • Count the onboard ports first. Four 1GbE ports come fixed on every DL360e Gen8, so a second 1GbE card only earns a slot if you need more links or segregation.
  • Decide which slot the card lives in. Slot 1 takes full-height, half-length cards up to 250mm; slot 2 is low profile, so a full-height adapter has one home.
  • Budget memory for 10GbE: HPE requires at least 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter, which matters on a single-processor build.
  • Match media to the fabric. The 530T and 561T run on existing copper; SFP+ and QSFP parts need cables or transceivers, purchased separately.
  • The 366i is not replaceable: there is no mezzanine to swap, so upgrading the primary fabric costs a PCIe slot.

DL360e Gen8 Networking Adapters FAQ

Does the HPE ProLiant DL360e Gen8 have onboard network ports?
Yes. The HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 366i adapter is standard on the system board and gives four 1GbE ports. The dedicated 1Gb iLO 4 remote management port is separate from those four and is not used for production traffic.

Does the DL360e Gen8 have a FlexibleLOM slot?
No. That is one of the clearest differences between the DL360e Gen8 and the DL360p Gen8. On the DL360e the quad-port 366i is fixed on the board, and HPE lists 10 Gigabit networking for this server as an option via stand-up card.

How do I add 10GbE to a DL360e Gen8?
With a stand-up PCIe adapter in one of the two expansion slots. The QuickSpecs list the NC552SFP, NC523SFP, 530SFP and 560SFP+ on SFP+, and the 530T and 561T on RJ-45 BASE-T. HPE also requires at least 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter.

How many PCIe slots does the DL360e Gen8 have?
Two, on a removable riser cage. Slot 1 is a full-height, half-length (250mm) x16 PCIe 3.0 slot. Slot 2 is a low profile PCIe 2.0 slot with an x8 connector and four electrical lanes running to it.

Do DL360e Gen8 10GbE adapters include cables or transceivers?
No. HPE states that direct attach cables for copper environments, or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments, must be purchased separately. BASE-T adapters such as the 530T and 561T use standard copper patch cables.

Can the DL360e Gen8 run InfiniBand?
Yes, through PCIe host channel adapters. The QuickSpecs list the InfiniBand 4X QDR ConnectX-2 PCIe G2 dual-port HCA, the QLogic InfiniBand 4X QDR PCIe G2 dual-port HCA, and the InfiniBand FDR/Ethernet 10Gb/40Gb 2-port 544QSFP adapter.
