HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12 Processors

HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12 Processors

Genuine HPE-qualified Intel Xeon 6 processor kits for the HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12, new and refurbished. This is a single-socket server, so the one processor you choose sets everything downstream: the memory clock, whether the sixth PCIe slot and the second OCP slot exist, and whether the rear E3.S bays can attach to the CPU at x4.

DL340e Gen12 Processor Specifications

  • Socket: one; the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 Performance Heat Sink Kit is required ("Performance heatsink must be selected"), and six performance fans are included
  • Efficient-core (E-core) kits: seven, from the 6710E 64-core 205W to the 6766E and 6780E at 144 cores; 96MB to 108MB L3
  • Performance-core (P-core) kits: eleven, from the 6507P 8-core 150W to the 6787P 86-core 350W, including the 3.8GHz 6732P 32-core; 48MB to 336MB L3
  • Mainline kits: six, from the 6505P 12-core 150W to the 6760P 64-core 330W
  • Single Socket Rich I/O kits: six, from the 6511P 16-core 150W to the 6781P 80-core 350W — no UPI links, 136 PCIe lanes, and the only series that enables PCIe slot 5, OCP B and the x4 direct-attach E3.S cable
  • Memory: DDR5-6400 at 1 DPC and 5200 MT/s at 2 DPC on every 6400 MT/s part; the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E are 5600 MT/s; all support 2TB
  • Security: Intel SGX enclave 512GB on the E-core and P-core series, 128GB on the Mainline and Rich I/O series

The processor decides the slot count. Only the Single Socket Rich I/O series (6511P to 6781P, 136 PCIe lanes) enables PCIe slot 5, the OCP B slot and the x4 direct-attach cable for the rear E3.S bays; every other Xeon 6 kit leaves the DL340e Gen12 with five slots, one OCP slot and x2 attach. Choose I/O before core count.

Which Xeon 6 series suits a DL340e Gen12?

On this chassis the Rich I/O row is the one to read first. HPE's own example configurations use a 6511P, a 6521P and a 6731P — all Rich I/O parts — because the six-slot rear only gives you slot 5 and OCP B with one, and the rear E3.S bays only attach to the processor at PCIe Gen5 x4 with one. Pick an E-core or P-core part and the same chassis has five slots, one OCP slot and x2 direct attach.

Choosing the Right DL340e Gen12 Processor

  • Decide I/O before cores. If the build needs six PCIe slots, two OCP adapters or x4 NVMe to the rear cage, the processor must be a 6511P, 6521P, 6731P, 6741P, 6761P or 6781P.
  • Check the memory clock on E-core parts. Three of the seven E-core kits (6710E, 6731E, 6746E) run memory at 5600 MT/s; every other kit runs 6400 at one DIMM per channel.
  • Buy the heat sink with the processor. There is one heat sink for this server, the Gen12 Performance Heat Sink Kit, and HPE requires it; the six performance fans are already in the chassis.
  • Stay on HPE's list. HPE's Xeon 6 naming chart marks some series as not supported on ProLiant Compute Gen12 platforms; the 30 kits here are the ones HPE qualifies for this server.

DL340e Gen12 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the DL340e Gen12 support?
One Intel Xeon 6 processor from four HPE-listed series: Efficient-core 6710E to 6780E (64 to 144 cores), Performance-core 6507P to 6787P (8 to 86 cores), Mainline 6505P to 6760P (12 to 64 cores) and Single Socket Rich I/O 6511P to 6781P (16 to 80 cores). Thirty kits in all, from 150W to 350W.

Is the DL340e Gen12 a dual-socket server?
No. It is a 2U single-socket (1P) server; every processor kit here is for one socket, and the 16 DIMM slots and all PCIe lanes hang off that one processor.

What does Rich I/O mean on a DL340e Gen12 processor?
HPE's Single Socket Rich I/O series (6511P, 6521P, 6731P, 6741P, 6761P, 6781P) has no UPI links and 136 PCIe lanes. On this server it is the only series that enables PCIe slot 5 and the OCP B slot with the six-slot rear, and the x4 direct-attach cable for the rear E3.S bays.

Do I need a separate heat sink for a DL340e Gen12 processor?
Yes. HPE's configuration table states a performance heatsink must be selected, and the one listed is the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 Performance Heat Sink Kit. The six performance fans are included with the server.

Which DL340e Gen12 processor gives the fastest memory?
Any of the 6400 MT/s parts, which is every kit except the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E at 5600 MT/s. Memory runs at 6400 only with one DIMM per channel; two per channel drops any processor to 5200 MT/s.

What is the maximum core count in a DL340e Gen12?
144 cores, with either the 6766E (1.9GHz, 250W) or the 6780E (2.2GHz, 330W) Efficient-core processor. The highest Performance-core count is 86 on the 6787P.
