HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9 Parts

The HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9 is a half-height c-Class server blade built on the Intel C610 chipset, taking up to two Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors across 16 DDR4 DIMM slots. It is not a standalone machine: it plugs into an HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure, which supplies its power, its cooling and the interconnect bays its network ports land in. Every part below is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships. Live pricing for each part number appears in the tables further down this page.

BL460c Gen9 Platform at a Glance

  • Form factor: half-height c-Class server blade, 7.11 × 2.18 × 20.37 in, 14.00 lb fully populated — it has no power supplies and no fans of its own
  • Enclosure: HPE BladeSystem c7000, 10U and up to sixteen of these blades, or c3000, 6U and up to eight; HPE calls for 10 fans in the c7000 and 6 in the c3000 for optimal cooling
  • Processors: one or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 series, from four to twenty-two cores each, with 10MB to 55MB of L3 cache depending on model
  • Memory: 16 DDR4 DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels at two DIMMs per channel — taking HPE SmartMemory Registered or Load Reduced modules to 512GB registered or 2TB load reduced
  • Drive bays: two hot-plug small form factor SmartDrive bays taking SAS or SATA hard drives, SAS or SATA solid state drives, or NVMe SSDs
  • Storage controller: HPE Smart Array P244br with 1GB flash backed write cache, HPE Smart HBA H244br, or the embedded B140i chipset SATA controller — RAID 0 and RAID 1 on all three
  • Networking: one FlexibleLOM, always dual port, at 10Gb or 20Gb, with one port routed to interconnect bay 1 and the other to bay 2
  • Expansion: two I/O mezzanine slots, both x16 PCIe 3.0 — Type A in slot 1, Type A or Type B in slot 2, which needs a processor in socket 2 to come alive
  • Management: embedded HPE iLO 4 with a 10/100 Mbps link to the enclosure Onboard Administrator, 4GB of NAND, an internal Micro SDHC slot and an internal USB 3.0 connector
  • Also listed below: LPe1605 and QMH2672 16Gb Fibre Channel host bus adapters, plus QDR and FDR InfiniBand mezzanine adapters

This is a blade, not a rack server. The BL460c Gen9 has no power supplies, no fans and no rails of its own — an HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure supplies all three, and every network port lands in one of that enclosure's interconnect bays. What you buy for the blade itself is memory, two drives, a controller, processors and the cards that feed those bays.

BL460c Gen9 Parts FAQ

What enclosure does the BL460c Gen9 need?
An HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure. The blade has no power supplies, fans or rails of its own - the enclosure provides power, cooling and the interconnect bays its network ports land in.

What processors does the BL460c Gen9 support?
One or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 series processors on the Intel C610 chipset. All processors in one blade must be identical, so a second CPU has to match the one already fitted. The kits listed here are the v3 series.

How much memory can a BL460c Gen9 take?
2TB using sixteen 128GB octal-rank Load Reduced DIMMs, or 512GB using sixteen 32GB Registered DIMMs. The blade has 16 DDR4 slots, eight per processor, and LRDIMMs and RDIMMs cannot be mixed in the same blade.

How many drives fit in a BL460c Gen9?
Two. The blade has two hot-plug small form factor SmartDrive bays taking SAS or SATA hard drives, SAS or SATA SSDs, or NVMe SSDs. Anything beyond that lives on the SAN or on a storage blade in the enclosure.

Which storage controller does the BL460c Gen9 use?
One of three. The HPE Smart Array P244br carries 1GB of flash backed write cache, the HPE Smart HBA H244br carries none, and the embedded B140i is chipset SATA. All three support RAID 0 and RAID 1 across the two bays.

Can I move parts from a BL460c Gen8 into a Gen9 blade?
Very little. The Gen8 is a DDR3 machine and HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the Gen9. Drives from G7 and earlier will not seat either, and the storage controllers are a different family entirely.
