The ProLiant ML line is the tower half of the ProLiant range: a vertical chassis built to stand on a floor or a bench rather than to mount on rails. The extra internal volume is the point — a tower has room for full-height cards, deeper drive cages and external media bays that a 1U rack server cannot house. What Defines an ML Tower Server
- Vertical chassis, no rails needed: an ML stands on its own feet. Several ML models were also offered with a tower-to-rack conversion, which changes the outer chassis rather than the board, so the same machine can turn up in either orientation.
- Power is the clearest split in the family: the smaller ML machines are built around a single fixed supply, while the larger ML chassis take hot-plug supplies that can run as a redundant pair. A hot-plug supply will not fit a fixed-supply chassis, so check which the machine has before ordering.
- Two kinds of drive cage: entry towers often use a fixed cage with non-hot-plug drives; the larger models use hot-plug cages in SFF or LFF. The cage decides the carrier, and the two carrier types are not interchangeable.
- Full-height, full-length expansion: a tower takes cards that will not physically fit a 1U rack server, which is why ML machines often end up carrying tape controllers and older full-height adapters.
- External media bays: 5.25-inch bays on the front face for optical or tape, a feature the rack line largely dropped.
- Cooling for an office, not an aisle: an ML is designed to run outside a data centre, with larger and slower fans rather than the high-static-pressure fans a rack chassis uses.
