HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 Memory
The DL580 Gen10 has 48 DIMM slots, 12 per processor, and takes HPE DDR4 SmartMemory. Which kit you need depends on one thing: the processor. 1st Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors use DDR4-2666 kits; 2nd Gen processors use DDR4-2933 kits. Either way the server supports up to 6TB with four processors and 128GB LRDIMMs in every slot.

How processor and memory speed fit together
The kit speed is the fastest the DIMM can run. The processor sets the speed it actually runs at, so a Gold 5218 with DDR4-2933 kits runs them at 2666 MT/s and that is normal. Buy the kit family that matches the generation; the processor takes care of the rest.

Each processor has 6 channels with 2 slots per channel; six matching DIMMs per processor fill every channel once. HPE's population table lists 1 to 12 DIMMs per processor and marks 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11 unbalanced and not recommended; the picker uses 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 or 12.
Three rules that avoid a return
1 Match the kit to the processor
DDR4-2933 kits are listed for 2nd Gen processors and DDR4-2666 kits for 1st Gen. If you are adding to memory that is already installed, match the part number on the existing DIMM label and you cannot go wrong.
2 RDIMM or LRDIMM, never both
The 8GB to 64GB registered kits and the 64GB and 128GB load-reduced kits cannot share a server. Keep every DIMM the same capacity, rank and speed, and populate all installed processors identically in even quantities.
3 Fill channels for bandwidth
Six matching DIMMs per processor fill every channel once and give the most bandwidth. Two, three or four per processor are fine for capacity; populate the slots in the order printed on the system board.
DL580 Gen10 memory questions
How much memory does the HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 support?
Up to 6TB with four processors: 48 slots with 128GB DDR4 LRDIMMs in every one. With registered DIMMs the maximum is 3TB (64GB DDR4-2933 RDIMMs in every slot at 2666 MT/s; 1.5TB at 2933 MT/s with one DIMM per channel). A single processor can use only its 12 slots. HPE: more than 1TB per socket needs an M or L suffix processor on 2nd Gen (1.5TB per socket on 1st Gen needs an M), and above 1.5TB per socket needs persistent memory kits.
What type of memory does the DL580 Gen10 use?
HPE DDR4 SmartMemory. With 1st Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors the kits are DDR4-2666; with 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors the kits are DDR4-2933. Registered DIMMs run from 8GB to 64GB; load-reduced DIMMs are 64GB and 128GB.
Can I use DDR4-2666 memory with a 2nd Gen processor, or DDR4-2933 with a 1st Gen?
Buy the kit family HPE lists for your processor generation. If the server already has memory installed, add the same part number rather than mixing families; mixed configurations are not supported and the server may not boot.
Will the memory run at 2933 MT/s?
Only with a processor rated for it, such as a Xeon Gold 62xx, Platinum 82xx or Gold 5222. Other Gold 52xx processors run memory at 2666 MT/s. The kit still has to be the DDR4-2933 family; the processor simply clocks it lower. On the DL580 Gen10, DDR4-2933 registered DIMMs run at 2666 MT/s with two per channel; load-reduced DIMMs keep 2933.
What about Intel Optane persistent memory and NVDIMMs?
They are listed for this server but are not ordinary memory kits: Optane persistent memory needs a 2nd Gen processor and a matching DDR4 configuration (up to 12TB of persistent memory per HPE, 2nd Gen processors only; NVDIMMs are for 1st Gen processors only, up to six per processor), and NVDIMMs have their own population rules. Check HPE's population rules for them before adding either to an existing server.
