- Match the speed grade to your EPYC generation: DDR5-4800 kits for 4th Gen 9004, DDR5-6400 kits for 5th Gen 9005 — both physically fit, but the wrong grade wastes performance or money.
- Populate both processors identically and work toward all 12 channels per socket — a lopsided layout leaves bandwidth on the table.

Should I buy DDR5-4800 or DDR5-6400 memory for the DL385 Gen11?
Match the grade to your processor generation. 4th Gen AMD EPYC 9004 processors are compatible with 4800 MT/s DIMMs and 5th Gen 9005 processors with 6400 MT/s DIMMs. Both grades physically fit, but the server runs every module at the slowest speed installed, so a 4800 kit caps a 9005 server at 4800 MT/s.
Does the DL385 Gen11 slow down when every DIMM slot is filled?
No. This platform is one DIMM per channel - 12 channels and 12 slots per processor - so populating all 24 slots does not trigger the 2-DIMM-per-channel step-down found on two-slot-per-channel servers.
Do DL385 Gen11 DIMMs need to be installed in matched sets?
Yes, in practice. Keep both processors' populations identical, do not mix x4 modules with x8, and do not mix 3DS modules with non-3DS. The 128GB RDIMM is a non-3DS part; the 256GB RDIMM is 3DS.
