HPE ProLiant SL4545 G7 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant SL4545 G7, new and refurbished. The ports at the back come from the I/O module rather than from the node, so what a node already has depends on which module was fitted: the 1G module gives two Gigabit ports, the 10G module adds a 10GbE SFP+ and a QSFP connector on top of them.

SL4545 G7 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded per node: an HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 362i on the Intel I350 controller, two RJ-45 ports, present with either I/O module
  • 10G I/O module: adds an HPE Ethernet 10Gb 2-port 544i, a dual-port ConnectX-3 part offering 10GbE or QDR InfiniBand over x8 PCIe Gen2
  • Rear connectors: one 10GbE SFP+ and one 10GbE or 40Gb InfiniBand QSFP per node, present only with the 10G I/O module
  • Adapter requirements: 10 Gigabit Ethernet on the QSFP port needs the QSFP to SFP+ adapter; InfiniBand needs the HPE InfiniBand Enablement Kit
  • Expansion: one PCIe 2.0 x8 low profile slot per node, in the I/O module, enabled by the SL454x Storage Mezzanine to PCIe kit — one expansion option per node
  • Cards stocked: the NC365T 4-port Gigabit server adapter, and the dual-port 10 Gigabit 530SFP, 530T and 561T adapters

Check the back of the chassis before buying a 10 Gigabit card. The ports come from the I/O module, not the node. The 1G module gives each node two Gigabit RJ-45 ports; the 10G module adds a 10GbE SFP+ and a 10GbE or 40Gb InfiniBand QSFP connector on top of them. On a 10G module, a card in the low profile slot adds ports rather than speed.

Do You Need a Card, or Is It Already in the I/O Module?

What you needWhere it comes from
Two Gigabit RJ-45 ports per nodeAlready present — the embedded 362i, on either I/O module
10 Gigabit SFP+ or QSFP at the rearThe 10G I/O module and its embedded 544i, not an add-in card
Four Gigabit copper portsNC365T in the low profile slot
10 Gigabit over SFP+ or RJ-45 in the slot530SFP for SFP+, 530T or 561T for RJ-45
InfiniBand on the QSFP portThe InfiniBand Enablement Kit, on a node with the 10G module

The first two rows are worth checking before spending anything. A node on the 10G I/O module already has 10 Gigabit at the back, and a card in the low profile slot would add ports rather than speed. The card earns its place when the module fitted is the 1G one, when more than two ports are needed, or when the rear media does not match the switch.

Choosing the Right SL4545 G7 Network Adapter

  • Look at the back of the chassis first. The SFP+ and QSFP connectors tell you which I/O module a node has, and only one module connects to a node.
  • One slot, one card, one node. The low profile PCIe slot takes one expansion option, the same slot a P421, an H221 or an I/O accelerator would want.
  • The slot has to be enabled. The SL454x Storage Mezzanine to PCIe kit makes it usable, and a node with two P420i controllers cannot have it.
  • Match the media, not just the speed. The 530SFP takes SFP+ optics or direct attach copper; the 530T and 561T are RJ-45. Cables and transceivers are separate.
  • Count cards per node. A 3x15 with three populated nodes needs three adapters to give every node the same networking.

An adapter and a storage card want the same slot — read SL4545 G7 storage controllers before committing it. SL4545 G7 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does an SL4545 G7 node have?
Two Gigabit RJ-45 ports as standard, from the embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 362i, present with either I/O module. A node with the 10G I/O module also gets a 10GbE SFP+ connector and a QSFP connector.

Does the SL4545 G7 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, two ways. The 10G I/O module carries an embedded HPE Ethernet 10Gb 2-port 544i adapter, and a 530SFP, 530T or 561T card can go in the node's low profile PCIe slot instead.

Do I need the QSFP to SFP+ adapter?
Only to run 10 Gigabit Ethernet on the QSFP port, where HPE specifies it. The separate SFP+ connector on the same I/O module needs no adapter.

Can I run InfiniBand on an SL4545 G7?
Yes, on a node fitted with the 10G I/O module. Its QSFP connector carries 40Gb QDR InfiniBand once the HPE InfiniBand Enablement Kit is added.

Are cables and transceivers included with these adapters?
No. SFP+ cards ship bare, so direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones, are ordered separately.

Can I fit a network card and a storage card in the same node?
No. Each node has one low profile PCIe slot in its I/O module, and HPE allows one expansion option in it - a network adapter, an external storage controller or an I/O accelerator.
