HPE ProLiant SL230s Gen8 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant SL230s Gen8, new and refurbished. Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced cannot be mixed, and the ceilings are not the same. Registered reaches 256GB per tray and Unbuffered stops at 128GB. Converting a tray from one technology to the other means replacing every module in it, so check what is fitted before ordering a single kit.

Registered is the type to buy for capacity here, and it is the type stocked in every size from 4GB to 16GB. The 512GB figure belongs to Load Reduced DIMMs and is a platform capability rather than something on this page; the registered ceiling is 256GB. Whichever technology is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match, because the three cannot be mixed in one tray.
Choosing the Right SL230s Gen8 Memory
- Memory from an earlier ProLiant generation will not do. HPE does not qualify or warrant it on this server, and SmartMemory is what the Gen8 authentication and performance features depend on.
- The processor sets the speed ceiling, not the module. Entry E5-2600 parts run memory at up to 1066MHz and base parts at up to 1333MHz, whatever the DIMM is rated at.
- Filling both DIMMs per channel costs nothing in clock. HPE rates the stocked Registered and Unbuffered kits at the same frequency at one and at two DIMMs per channel, so a full sixteen-slot tray holds its rated speed.
- One processor means eight usable slots. DIMMs work only against an installed processor, so the second CPU is what opens the rest of the memory.
- The Xeon E5-2620 will not run DIMMs at 1.35V. Low-voltage PC3L modules still go in that tray, but the ROM-Based Setup Utility has to be set to operate them at 1.5V.
